Carbon Fiber Hood
I'm not too much of a car person, but I've seen many cars, including the S2000, with carbon fiber hood. What does that do? Is it more of an advantage to have that or is it just for looks?
Carbon-Fiber is very light yet strong, so it got the reputation of being very light, and it is 'cool' to have one because of that. There is also a difference of wet carbon versus dry carbon. Dry carbon will be lighter, but more expensive. Most CF hoods are wet carbon and on a car like the S2000 with a light hood will do little if anything in weight difference. I have a dry carbon Top Secret hood with vents in it. It is noticeably lighter than a stock hood, and has the added benefit of extra cooling capacity. The OEM style hoods that I have seen do practically nothing other than looks cool, this is why most people have them on their cars.
Blah, the S2000 hood is very light. It is not a large hood and very light. You won't save much with weight on a S2000 by getting a CF hood.
It is mainly a cosmetic mod unless you have functional vents.

get a hood with vents...a OEM CF hood has no purpose other than looks like everyone else said...no huge weight difference and it wouldnt b worth $500
yep, some after market hoods are heavier than stock.
There is a nice misconception going on about dry and wet carbon which really doesn't exist. Translations from Japanese websites are missing the point. Carbon fiber panels are either made by hand laying (cheapest) like laying fiberglass, or vacumn bagged, or vacumn bagged and heated in an autoclave. The latter process being the most expensive. The mold is the true cost in building anything out of carbon fiber. A good mold is what makes the product, and few go out of their way to make a good mold for a part that fits properly and is engineered not to flex with head or warp. Happy carbon hunting.

CF hoods save some weight, though not by a huge amount but everything adds up.
Othen than that, properly designed hood vents decrease drag at high speeds and help keep the engine bay cool.
For example, the engine bay temp is noticeably lower with the Mugen hood compared with the J's Racing.

I took temps of my J's vs stock hood, and it was somewhere in the neighborhood of just like -6F cooler. AFAIK they weighed the same. It's all good though, I paid the same for my J's as I sold my stock
Yes, same goes with my '99 Accord. WAY heavy compared to the carbon hood.
The S2000 hood is aluminum and weighs about the same as a CF hood, but CF gives you "pimp points"...
I needed the Top Secret (or any vented hood) for engine bay cooling, and it just so happens it gets the girls all wet as well....

yeah...cf hoods look nice, but unless vented on the s2k...useless. on other cars that use conventional steels hoods, especially ones w/ longer hoods like the prelude and the s13/s14 models...cf is good.
long live the hammer
