Default Portflow HEAD Work

Hey who has done portflow head work to their R's? How did it come out? Did it make a big power difference?

Well, its not an ITR, but I had my b16a head done by Portflow, and is enough that with a "budget" CTR setup inmy 1991 Civic EX has taken me to a 14.02 @ 97.4 mph, going through the traps at 9200 rpm with really good top end charge even without dialing the ITR cams.

I am very happy with the work and would add that Tom is polite, courteous and efficient, delivers on time with NO smack. He even asked me when I needed it by, and when I told him a week, it was there THEN....

Do not compare him with the service of, say Endyn, or some of the non-producing smack-talkers.

Tom is quite good. He is trustworthy and is an exceptional value. I'd recommend him highly although I use DPR for the all out motors.

DPR is good. I like their Clover leafed chambers but they are pricey. I 've heard lots of good things about Portflow. I wouldn't do it unless you are gonna upgrade other things like cams, higher compression. Its expensive and its a big job to do.

I've had excellent results using Portflow.

Tom has done about 3 or 4 heads for me.

Real quality work, and a nice guy too.

I have no experience with DPR. The only experience I ever had with them was purchasing a set of their cam gears years ago. They were cut improperly and didnt line up worth a dick. DPR didn't want to help. Even for a direct swap out. Dicks.

ITR-Animal
Here are the pics of my head that I just got back from Dpr.
Dan is a good guy and even though my job is done he is still has been coaching me on things via email and the phone, Including teaching me things about port design + cc'ing with detaild pics. He has been emailing me from home also, which says alot in my book. My best advice is to call the different choices you have see which one sounds like they can provide you with the set up you are looking to achieve.

Honestly that debate has been going on for 15 years, depends on who you ask. On a old ancient v-8 yes it probably would but on a 9500 rpm honda Imo probably not as much as E----n says. let's see what power I make before I question it . I would like to see some sort of controlled study on this issue, So if any one has seen one let me know. I'm not being sarcastic.

Here's several shots of my ITR head after portflow headwork (with bronze valve guides) with Toda valve springs and Crower Titanium retainers. Tom does great work, and I got the head back in two weeks. They also port matched the Intake manifold at no additional cost. Total price with valve guides and new valve seals was $940. My 1992 GS (Type-R hybrid) ran a 13.8 second quarter mile @ 101mph (1.997 60') with slicks and full interior. I'm going to dyno my car real soon.

For a complete list of my mods, check here.

I still need to get to the dyno and fine tune my setup. I know there's more power to be made. Let me know if you have any other questions.

I will ask here since it's related to the topic. How can one determine when porting the head is necessary? I have been told that there's no need to port the head of an ITR, that maybe cleaning it will be the only thing to do, but porting is not necessary. Can anyone give me some advice? If the set up consists of basically I/H/E, an aftermarket valvetrain like a Toda set up, aswell as higher compression, will porting the head be necessary to get the most of the set up?

thanks

For a while, I was a firm believer in the fac that porting the **** out of a head and using stock compression and stock cams would give not-so-great results.
I was proved wrong two weeks ago.
I'll call my dyno guy and see if he can print up the before and after runs for me on one sheet of paper.

Basically, it was like this...
ITR motor, stock compression, AEM intake, JDM 4-1 header, stock ITR exhaust, adjustable fuel pressure, AEM cam gears on stock cams.
178ish on the HP and 129 on the torque.

Only difference in the second run was installing a ported B16A head done by Topspeed Performance. The head was only milled 12 thousandths, so compression jumped maaaaybe .4-.5 if you're lucky. Anyway, it was stock valves, just a complete port job and 3 angle valve job. Peak HP was the same, or within 1hp, but ALL THE WAY THROUGH the rpm-band, there were great gains. Peak torque went from 129.0 and falling off, to a much more consistent 130-132 throughout, with a peak of 132.6ft/lb. Midrange horsepower was gained especially, and due to this, the engine responded extremely well to lower the VTEC engagement point to 4600rpm. The curve is beautiful.

I'll get this dyno scanned so you guys can see this.

This is on my car, BTW.
