Default Kumho Ecsta 712's vs. Yokohama AVS ES100

Posted in EG forum also but thought it was appearance related too and might get some more feedback here.

Alright, I've read a lot about both and here is my dilema. On my 99 SI with OEM SI wheels I have Kumho 712's in front and 711's in back. The 711's are shot and need replaced. I was planning on putting the new tires on front and moving the 712's to the rear as I always do. After much reading (on here and other places) I think I want to give the Yokohama's a try. My biggest concern is I don't know if it going to look funny or even be noticeable with mismatched tires front and rear. At least now I have Kumho's all around so they look the same.

And has anyone ran the Yoko's and have anything good or bad to say? I like my Kumho's but I've never had anything else to compare them to. The car is a daily driver and sees a lot of Oregon rain with occasional trips to the track in the summer.

I have gone through 2 sets of yokohoma paradas and ES100s. I am going to be buying another set of ES100s for my car when i get rims. I have only had them in phoenix though so i have barely driven on them in the rain.

I didn't mean so much the tread pattern as the stuff on the sidewall. Kumho's look similar between the 711 and 712. And another option is just to go to a 205-50-15 in the 712. Do you think it will look bad or even noticeable if I have 195-50-15 on back and 205 on front? And will 205's fit my stock SI wheels fine?

I would hope so! Yoks are much more expensive aren't they? Last time I checked a set of 15" es100s NEVER went for low 200s..

Well only reasons I'd choose [I have 712s] 712s is because

1. Performance ain't too important.. Daily driven about 80 miles a week
2. I'm a **** gotta rep for the tires..
3. Saves me money..

a little OT: but how did you like the Kumho 711's? Thought I'd ask before I order mine

Personally there wasn't THAT much of a difference in 711 vs 712, but I never pushed my car to the limit. The 711s wore down much faster I can tell you that.
Also, the 711 was 180 and 712s were 230 installed, so I bit the bullet and went with the "better" tires. Your choice really but I'd still go with 712s.

its not really the best idea to mix and match tires. i'd buy all 4 at once.

Why? Its just fine as long as the fronts match and the rears match. In fact this is the first vehicle I have ever owned that had matching sizes all around. Usually there is a wider tire in rear.

Why replace only 2 tires at a time? You end up getting more life out of the tires if you have a set of matching 4 and you rotate them regularly (every 3K-5K miles).

Just so you know 205/50 is the correct +0 size for Si's, stock size being 195/55. 195/50 is a bit small.

My friend has 205/50 711's on 15x6.5 slipstreams on his hatch. I have 205/50 ES100's on my stock GS-R wheels. We swapped wheels one day, and he didn't want to give mine back. He said the ES100's felt many leaps and bounds better than the 711's. Basically he said his 711's are JUNK compared to my ES100's.

You live in the NW right? Was that trade done on a rainy day? How they handle in the rain is starting to be a factor in deciding.

My biggest problem with mix matching is the false sense of security you get as time goes on. People tend to forget that they have a pair of old and new. Old tires are a bad thing; especially here in the 503.
I recently bought a full set of ES100's and I LOVE them. Outstanding in wet weather and insane in dry. 205/40/17 if I remember correctly. Got them for that Discount Tires off of 217 and Metzger by Washington Sq.. Before these, I was running on an old set of Proxes FZ4's. Shitty and exepnsive.

Oh and as for peeps noticing the different tread pattern, I DO as do most of my friends. It makes us cringe. I don't recommend it unless you absolutely can't afford it.

On a side note, where do you roll? There was a Blue Si in Sheerwood that looked like the ride in your avatar.

Nope I'm in TN and MS. We swapped on a sunny day. My ES100's do awesome in the rain, I seriously could not think the 711's would be any better.

Thanks, I might give Discount a call tommorrow and check prices. I usually order from Tirerack. I have a friend who just prints out the tire rack price and takes it into the and they match the price.

And there are 2 in Sherwood that I see all the time. One is basically stock with Altezza's I believe and the other has mirror tint and oem fogs with painted bezels and works in Newberg. I see both of them all the time. I never have my SI out that way, I'm always in the work truck when out there.

My bad, for some reason I thought you lived in Seatlle. Maybe because of the Starbucks avatar. Anyways, I think I have decided on the Yoko's but will stick with 195-50-15 simply because that is what I have had and it is $20 more per tire to go with 205. Tirerack here I come unless someone knows of a cheaper place.

sorry if i'm looking out for him from a safety aspect. when you have two different treads they will obviously react different, regardless if the two fronts are the same and two rears are the same (but different tire than front). and thanks for your worthless comment
