IS THIS A FAIR PRICE FOR A 91 DISTRIBUTOR? $700

my car wont start basically. so i took it to the shop and they ran diagnostic on it and said it needs a new distributor. the dude told me $700 for a new one or $350 for a used one from a junk yard with no guarantee. they told me that i only could use a distributor from a 90 or 91 accord so if i got a used one its gonna be as old as mine....and thus probable that it wont last that much longer. i know when i had to get a distributor cap on a old lebaron it was only like $35 ...but dude told me that the honda distributor is one big peice that u have to replace, where as american cars u can simply replace a small lil module for cheap.
does this sound about right? or are these cats tryig to jerk me. i told them i was gonna think about it. and where can i go to price parts , cause sometimes i think these guys just think of prices from out the clear blue

700 bucks just for the distributor...they are taking you BIG TIME. I would check at checker or http://www.hondaautomotiveparts.com or http://www.thepartsbin.com and also are you doing the work yourself?
700 is outrageous, i would definitely check around
http://www.manhonda.com also has full line of oem parts

they're doing the work. charging like $250 for a used distributor and $150 for the work
also at the honda automotive site , there is a distributor housing for $300 , so maybe they arent lying, iono. i kinda think they inflate the prices

well, if its the whole assembly, might be a good price. i know i paid around 3 something for cap and rotor replacment, including labor. when mine went dead almost 2 years ago on my 92 accord.

or, you could do the work...it's extremely easy...just unbolt it and whaaalaa...invest in a timing gun ($20) and get the distributor from ebay or hondautomotiveparts for like $200 new...
You could just need a new cap (around 20 bucks new) that solves a lot of problems, or the internal coil....around 100 bucks, if its the whole distrubutor it should cost around 200-275 bucks, and install is fairly easy....one of the best investments I have made is in a chiltons manual

this dude is talking like its $700 from the dealer new and $350 from a junkyard wit no guarantee. he's saying it might break down in a week or two if i get the used one. so i was afraid to commit to that.

I buy from ebay all the time. Always check the sellers rating. He has a very good rating, so I would trust him.

yo guys i brought the hand book off amazon. and i'll prolly buy the distributor by friday or something.
now i'm going to try to do this **** myself, even tho i have never done any automotive work. EVER. what is the difficulty level of this job?
note: i dont have any tools or a lift. what do i need? i heard someone say something about a timing gun, and the mechanic mentioned timing it when he was telling me it was $700 job.

its easy as hell, just unplug 2 connectors, and pull off all the spark plug wires. Then unbolt the 3 bolts on the distributor.
line up the distrubtor to the grooves in the cam, and stick it in and bolt on the 3 bolts. Those are 12mm ones btw.
Then warm up the car fully, and get a timing gun, and rotate the dizzy backwards or foward, to set the tming to 15 deg BTDC and your set. Remember, rotate towards the firewall to advance.
