Default input shaft going. how long do I have?

I get a whirring/grinding that I can only really hear in 1st and 2nd. sometimes 3rd. It usually comes on at around 3000 rpms or higher. I can sometimes hear something when I'm at idle, and if I clutch it it goes away. I did some searching and it looks like my input shaft is *unhappy*.

a few people have mentioned that this can be driven on for some time. is there any "average" amount of time? like 3 months? 6 months? something like that? and is there any way to tell when it's almost gone?

I've been on it like this for at least 5000 miles. it's gotten no worse really so far as I can tell. doesn;t seem to effect the car's performance in any way at all. the only way I can tell anything is going on is by the sound.

The time you have is indefinite. I would suggest that you drop the tranny and repace the bearing ASAP, before it comes apart and trashes the tranny.

no ****? I can just replace a bearing? I was under the impression that it was neccecary to replace the tranny. or at least that replacing the whole unit was easier or cheaper or something. hmm.... thanks for the info. I have some more hunting to do.

I take it from your post, however, that the final breakage is sudden and catestrophic without much warning?

I just replaced my input shaft bearing yesterday. Happened to a buddy too. What usually seems to happen is a whrring sound first, then slight clicking, then loud clicking, then kaboom. Mine was at the quiet clicking stage. When I removed it looked fine but when you spin it, it's obvious the bearing is crappin out. I drove my car around sparingly for about a couple weeks(from the time I noticed it clicking) since I had no other option.

these helped me a lot:
