Default 5th gen fuel mileage question

i am trying to monitor my fuel mileage per tank. curious as to approx. how many miles/gallons left when the fuel light comes on. 94 accord which i believe has 16 gallon tank. obviously it will vary due to driving distance/conditions etc., but just wondering if anyone has checked. thanks in advance

5gens have a 17 gallon tank w/ a 2 gallon reserve.....so that means light comes on w/ 3 gallons left...........on CAI and **** spark plugs + ALOT of WOT, im getting roughly 20mpg.......

heres an easier way to do it without knowing you tack capacity, this way is a good estimate of how many miles you get to the tank.

1. Reset your odometer so its on 0 miles
2. Fill the tank up till it clicks and no more
3. Drive around till your next fill up (probably better to drive till close to empty, but you dont need to wait for the fuel light to come on)
4. Fill the tank up till it clicks again
4. Take the miles that shows up on the odometer, divide by the gallons you just filled up, and voila, MILES PER GALLON

this seems to be the easier way for me to figure out my fuel consumption

Well when your car was made they put out ratings for consumers....your gas tank is 17 gallon tank (not sure how big the reserve tank is...but 3 gallons sounds about right). And is rated to get about 25 mpg (city) and 31mpg (highway). Granted this is what the average rating is and is usually higher than what you get. With my 4th gen I get about 27mpg (some highway some city) but the highest I got on the highway was 35 mpg. I would say use your cruise control on the highway whenever possible and avoid braking...let the engine speed slow you down.

yeah, i usually crunch the numbers each tank, but the only reason im trying this is to see if i am losing mileage. during the winter i let her warm up more and what not so i am just checking. i thought my miles per gallon was low--so i am testing the theory. thanks doods

with my car the fuel sending unit is f*ed, right now the bars hitting the empty bar but only went 157m. from a full tank... light usually comes on near 300's but i never wait till it gets to that point. i fill up around like 250 to be on the safe side, ny'ers dont stop for one another for help if you get stranded :]

the most i have gotten out of my 97 manual is 410 miles out of a tank, but on average i usually fill up around 370-380 miles. and my driving is mainly stop and go/around town driving and if i'm on the interstate its only for a like 4-5 miles.

i once drover for 125 miles w/ the needle on empty....50 of those w/ the needle BELOW the line.....i filled b4 light came on too....i ended up having almost 4.5 gallons left....IMO theres gotta be somethign wrogn in design w/ the storage/measurement of fuel systems in hondas....cause that was all fuct up....of ourse mayb all the snow drifting made the gas slosh around too much to get an accurate reading....ah..oh well

FYI on the mileage check--i filled up 5 miles after the fuel light came on. it took 14.75 gallons to fill up. which means there was potentially around 2.25 gallons remaining. I got 360 miles to that tank with a combo of city and highway. which was like 24.5 miles/gallon. not too bad for a 94 with 143k. thats it im out

In my opinion, accords should give you 30 to 35 mpg - I have 92 accord and i routinely get 30 to 35 mpg - 380 to 410 miles on one tank.

I notice that you live in NYC - maybe 25mpg would be the best you could get if you live in the city?

yes you should be getting a lot better gas mileage

I am not sure what you can do but-

check tire pressure - low tire pressure uses up 1 to 2 mpg i think.

is your idle speed at 750 rpm (or whatever specified on the manual or under the hood) high idle speed can use up more gas

try fuel cleaner - I use redline fuel system cleaner.

incorrect timing?

operable PVC valve? (new?) Does it make sound when you shake it?

adjust valves? should be done every 15 k miles I think.

carbon buildup from not driving much and done most driving in city - it should not happen but who knows?

binding brakes?

dirty air filter?

timing belts should be replaced every 90 k miles.

thats best I can think of - they are mostly routine maintenance. maybe others can help better.
