Default Now I need to Install a Clutch... (Procedure question)

I have done everything now to fix my clutch/transmission issue https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=75471. Now i need to drop my transmission and check on some stuff there. I may need a new clutch or throwout bearing or something.

I need to know...How hard is it to drop the tranny?? I have never done it. Anyone who has done it themselves, could you please fill me in?? Thanks!!

It's relatively easy, just time consuming for the inexperienced and/or ill-equiped.
Get some Urea grease from Honda and a clutch aligment tool.
Otherwise, a friend, a long Sunday, and a good set of hand tools is all you need.
Oh, and a Helms Shop Manual too.

and make sure not to forget to take off the starter... that was my problem when i removed my tranny... i decided to pull my tranny with my starter still attached... i removed all the bolts except 1 which turned out to be the bottom starter bolt.. its relatively easy to remove it especially with the whole engine out of the car.

good luck

well, dustin pretty much put mine on for me and I helped with some small stuff. He didn't seem to have any trouble at all but he has plenty of experience with clutch installs. You have to take your headers and air intake off. Then you have take apart some of your suspension so that you can pull the cv joints out. After that, you gotta do other things like taking the left and front motor mounts off, etc. To tell you the truth, it looks like a pain in the *** just getting everything pulled apart to drop the tranny. If you're gonna do it, have the clutch alignment tool ready, and try to organize all the bolts because there will be many laying around. Also, try to have 2 jacks for your tranny and engine to make it easier to line them up when you bolt them back together. You'll need some torque specs for the flywheel, pressure plate, etc. so have a torque wrench handy. Also, have about 3 quarts of manual transmission fluid. It'll probably take half the day to do the job so start early.

I always have a problem with getting the axles out! Crap! I need someone to show me how to do it correctly one day!

Just have a jack under the tranny to cradle it so it'll be easier to bring down and up.

I installed my ACT clutch and an ITR LSD.
took me over 16 hours, maybe more.. I have tried to forget it all, it was hard and really tested my patience.
it can be done, and will be easier if you can spread it over two days and have a buddy help you out.
*hey, I have a clutch alignment too I can mail you if you do need one.
holy **** its a seriously time consuming job, even more so if you do not have the correct tools at the beginning.
you will need the C-clamp style 'ball joint puller' (actually a pusher) to make things go quickly, and a nice prybar to pop off the axles.
two rubber coated handled hammers too, use one rubber end against the cv joint and hit the end with the other hammer.
rent a tranny jack if possible, it is really awkward with just a plain floor jack.

good luck champ

Quite honestly, with just basica hand tools even and 2 people, we can drop the tranny in 1 hour and put the tranny back in, in one hour.. actually we've timed it... 55 mins exactly.

Just read over the helms or the article on c-speed. Once you know what your doing, it will go a lot smoother.

Also, a clutch alignment tool isn't absolutely necessary. just make sure the clutch disc is in the center of the PP before you bolt down the PP to the flywheel. Get is as close as you can.

It may be frustrating and time consuming the first time. But you learn alot and it gets easier every time.

Good luck and have fun.

yeah first time is a bitch, but if I had a friend that knew what I know now, we could swap one in an hour or two, yes indeed.

MUCH THANKS to C-Speed for their tutorial, it helped me a lot with minor things the Helms forgets to mention.

That's a big job to do by youself for the first time. I'm not saying it can't be done but you may want someone to assist you who already has done already. Also air tools can greatly speed up the process, but if you don't have you can get the job done still with hand tools.

Just make sure when you jack the car up, use plenty of jack stands. Don't just go under there with a hydraulic jack holding the car up.

Oh, I'm VERY mechanically inclined. Cars make sense to me. Also...i have air tools. Also...I do know how to jack up the car safely and correctly. I'm pretty confident that I can do it. Also, I can borrow my parents car, so down time isn't much of an issue.

it is always best to make sure people know safety first and foremost always. I know a guy who was crushed under his car 2 weeks ago here in houston

anyway, if you are mechanically inclined it should be no problem, just double check and make sure you retighten everything, it is not much fun to take it apart a second time because something was forgotten
