OT: 2002 Z06.. what are your thoughts.
Our club president just took delivery of his this week. He's promised me a ride in it. Not sure if he'll be dumb enough to let me take it out on a fun run though.
Any of you guys ever autocross a Z06?
A few people have had trouble with the fly-by-wire throttle control. Holding constant throttle through a turn it tends to pick up speed unpredictably. Other than that the car is a monster...lots of power, tire and brake, light weight, responsive, etc, etc. Faulkner had more than held his own in the Boxster S, though. If as many top drivers were in the Porsche the wins might be more evenly spread. It is probably a course-dependent thing, the more open the better the z06 does. And more hp for 2002, so the gap will only widen.
After viewing, sitting in, and hearing our club President's new '02 Z06 yesterday, it is incomprehensible to me how that car and the Aztek were produced by the same car company.

Absolutely priceless statement!!! I've said this for the last year now... the Z06 is the ONLY GM product I would ever consider buying.

It would be kinda nice to spend an extra $2k to upgrade the interior so it doesn't feel like a bunch of the interior parts were pulled from a Cavalier. For a $50k+ car it just feels a little cheap. Not that I would think twice if someone threw me the keys.

Then, they design crap like the Aztek. The Buick version isn't quite so bad.
And the Cavalier has got to be one of the most unispiring small cars in production.
But yeah, the Z06 is sweet. Now, if I only had $50k sitting around.
What is even worse is when you consider that GM's product lines in other countries are great (Australia and Europe). It seems that GM thinks of the US as a truck and fleet car nation, and that is it.
I couldn't agree more. The Holden Commodore and all those Aussie cars will give M5s a run for their money, yet GM won't sell them here. There is no good reason for it, other than the fact that the bean-counters run GM. That's always been their problem - they cut corners to make money, not bothering to make a good car in the long run. Then, they either have to rush and redesign it, or, more commonly, wait until it's hopelessly outdated and then make a new one. Drive a Cavalier back-to-back with a Ford Focus and you'll see what I'm talking about.
I think this argument could include just about every car manufacturer, not just GM. How many kick-*** Nissans, Hondas, Subarus, Mitsu's, etc., are available overseas that aren't available here? The majority of the American car-buying public is not made up of real car enthusiasts, unfortunately.

The Z06 interior is a total joke. I'd rather blow my 50k+ on crack or an FC3S with bad apex seals...................................

>>That car is so fast that it makes an average autocrosser look like Schumacher.<<
Noticed your sig was from DFW... Did you get out to the Ft. Worth NT, or the event in June at TMS that mirrored the NT course? Strelnieks and Mcclure were setting times that made a lot of the prepared class guys look sluggish. They're far from "average" but still...
That Z06 is monstrously fast on an open course. So much so that I fear the "powers that be" may try and tighten up course design a bit now that we have a "stock" car doing 90 mph across the backstretch on a few of the larger NT courses. I sincerely hope that doesn't happen as I think the Ft. Worth NT course was about the most perfect one I've ever driven.
I've also heard that the Z06 gets another dose of HP next year. Up to 420 or something???

The Z06 doesn't just own open tracks - it owns not so open courses too (not sure about really tight course though). Last event in the Houston area a Z06 got the fastest run of the morning at 60.xxx - as a comparison, Mod cars were in the 62-63 range and a Ford Cobra R was in the 64-65 range. This was the course:
September 30th event for Houston SCCA region
P.S. Lets see if this works.... Z06 picture
cars it beat....G1 Rx7 monster....and others....

Wait... Kumho Tires? I though Schotz had Kumhos on one end and Hoosiers on the other?! I remember something decidedly weird about that...
>>405 hp for '02, or do you mean for '03?<<
No, I think you're right. I remembered the numbers wrong for '02.

Not to take anything away from the Z-06 - but they are worlds away from any of the mod classes (down to CMod - or at least should be). I usually beat Z-06's in my S2000 locally - but that's driving. The mod cars (competitively setup and driven and at least down to CMod) will be 5-10 seconds faster than well set-up and driven Z-06's depending on the course.
