Default What the heck is this for ?

All 96-97 OBD-2 Accord vtec's out there...

Our stock intake tube has another tube chanelling off it underneath the original one. It goes to a small box right before the battery. What the heck is it for ? Im assuming something related to emmissions.

My question is... what is it for, can I get rid of it without throwing a code and what do all you aftermarket intake people do with it when installing your intake ??

it is probaby related to keeping intake sound levels down as well as having a small reserve of air for when you step on the gas suddenly.

I found that same thing on my 94. when i asked about it i was told it was to hold moisture for the airconditioning system. I figued that was way off but i wasnt positive about it. I got rid of mine and didnt throw a code and my car has been running fine in terms of air intake. just take it out and plug the little black vacuum tube that goes to it.

Ok. I know what it is now.

The box is called "resonator b" and has a butterfly valve built in it. The electrical connection on it is called the "intake control solenoid".

Apparently, at low speeds, the butterfly stays closed resulting in increased torque for around town driving. As engine speed increases the butterfly opens up for more air flow.

In my mind, what this means is.. i will lose torque by removing it and possibly throwing a check engine light if I disconnect that solenoid.

Comments ? Suggestions ? Im sure all you OBD-2 accord owners out there would like to know the answer to this as well.

Thanks.

IAR is a torque boost resonant chamber. When activated, it creates a positive pressure in the intake system enhancing mid range torque.

When engine speed is less than 2900 rpm, the IAR is deactivated. Intake are will not flow from IAR. When engine speed is 2900-3700 (mid-range), ECM activates IAR control solenoid valve, opening diaphram, increasing high-speed RPM torque. A malfunction in the IAR control system will cause a low engine power condition.

just replace it with cheap cold-air tubing and a nice filter.. That will give you more "torque" than some over-done plastic chamber will.

u wont throw a code.....its just a dumb resonator....and u wont loose torque....the selnoid didnt do **** when i removed it, so i wouldnt worry about it.....ive got AEM CAI on my 94, and while installing, if it was black, boxy, and connected to the intake tube, i took it off.....no problems whatsoever

Yours is OBD-1. I have OBD-2. There may be a difference.
