Default getting rid of power steering

What are the disadvantages to removing the power steering belt and pump from my DA? I would like to remove the belt and pump, but I don't want a car that is really hard to steer. Is it similar to manual steering in a old Civic or CRX or will rack and pinion parts be going out on me?

You will need to add a loopback and breather to the rack since it needs to have fluid flowing through it. Yes, the feel will be extremely heavy.

If you don't want a car that is hard to steer, then forget it. It sucks turning the wheel when getting out of parking lots etc. Most people take out the PS for better road feeling. I don't recommend you do it just for weight savings.

makes the car much funner to drive, you feel the road ALOT more then with the p/s. its a pain when your parking but if your going over 5mph its not bad at all. you can actualy feel when the tires break loose threw the wheel

Simply answer.. power steering racks are designed to have fluid moving flowing thru them. WIth a loop back and breather lubricating fluid that is still in the rack will be allowed to move which will allow the assembly to turn a little easier. If you removed all of the fluid and capped the inlet/outlet you are asking for a wreck since the rack will eventually lockup on you.

Too bad the quick ratio, manual steering "race base" racks were never available in the US. A race base rack will be replacing my P/S rack next month.

all i can say is my crx manual steering gives me a lot more feedback than my teg. There is also no lag in response time either, which helps a lot like in slaloms. Those are the benefits imo.

I drove my friend's car (civic) without power steering, and it is a big change from my Integra's steering. I guess it is something you could get used to, but make sure you want that before you go takin the parts off. I didn't like it personally, especially when going slow in apartment parking lots for speed bumps, turning the wheel, letting go and watching it snap back straight after all that work...

I considered taking out PS, but then i remembered how much of a bitch it is backing out of spaces and manuevering with one hand. Consider this if you are ever in a parking lot talking on your cell, or drinking something.

I'll eventually go to no PS tho, my pump is fucked so the steering wheel feels heavy anyway

if you do the loopback its not too bad. with the belt off i have noticed though its harder than just removing the whole pump and everything.
i took everything off mine. you get used to it after a while. it just sucks sometimes getting out of parking spots if you havent driven it for a while

I have the loop kit for a 94-01 integra if anybody wants it. It has everything you need. I bought it from tweakmiester and he sells a complete kit to loop the power steering.

Well if it is similar to the manual set-up in other hondas (I drove manual steering for five years) and compliments road racing, then I will eventually do this because I think the pump has been making noises and I don't want to replace it. I NEED to know more about modifying the loopback and breather into the rack. If anyone can give me detailed information on modifying the rack please post.

I think he's in the process of putting another batch together right now, so he should have a few available for sale by next week.

Yes Kendall, as you know, I'm putting together a new batch within the next week. However, I do the batches on a "special order" basis, so each of the kits from this batch is for a particular person. If anyone is interested, they can contact be within the next couple of days to be included in this batch.
