Stripped Tensioner bolt hole
im in the process of swaping out my 404 cams for my stockers becuase i failed emissions.. so i get everything in n all, i go to tighten my tensioner, and it gets a little tighter then it gets looser, so i pulled the bolt and tensioner out of there and theres a grip of metal shaving inside my tensioner, so i take a flashlight to the bolt hole, and its fuggin striped. now my question is what can i do now? should i take my block to a machinest shop and have em put new threads? or is there another way i can get threads in there? or should i get a new block and swap everything over? im really straped for cash right now, duno. lemme hear some opionins , TIA
damn!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! that is really bad........ummm........you should have a heli-coil tapped in that hole with a new bolt.
heli-coil is a double sided threded sleeve. it's installed by first drilling out the original hole and threads. re-threading the hole to the outside size of the heli-coil and then use some locktite on the outside of the heli-coil threads and then it's inserted into the new hole. in the end the hole on the inside of the sleeve should be the same original size for the tensioner bolt........hope this makes sense......if not just ask your machine shop about heli-coils and they can explain the process better.......
try not to over tighten the tensioner bolt! it really doesnt have to be THAT tight.......especially on the aluminium blocks.............oh.......i hope you werent doing this with a hot engine? the heat will make all the bolts and threads soft....trust me! i learned my lesson!!!
