Default timing problem

well I have changed t-belts on cars before without any problems, but this last time was a pain in my ***. I dont know why it was so difficult.

i finally got it timed, but on my way to work I had some problems. It seemed to backfire more than before. I dont know if I would call it "backfire" but it stumbled more than before.

It idles fine., but i guess i will take it back apart yet again. to check it out. anythoughts woudl be great.

i had the cam gear at TDC and the crank gear lined up with the arrow on the oil pump. and dist on #1.

thanks.

That's strange, about all I can tell you to do is what you're already doing... If it's stumbling you might have been off by one tooth which wasn't enough to really mess up your idle... Then again you should really know when everything is at TDC and if it was then you're the only one that knows it... I would say pull it back off, redo it and see if anything changes... If not then maybe it's something else... Good Luck

after looking at it i have a couple of questions.

I went and redid everything last night.

when i check my timing my dist in in the middle, and I can time it to the red mark. does that mean that everything is ok?

I can not get everythign to line up EXACTLY, i tried but the closest I can get is 1/2 a tooth. being that I can time it do you guys think that it is right? I wish i had a picture.

What motor are you working with here? D series right, if so that should make it that much easier... The TDC ticks for you cam and crank won't be perfectly dead on when you set the belt but they should be closer than one tooth to the right would be or one to the left... Same goes if you have a B series (just another cam to line up)... I take it that you don't have a digital timing gun right (atleast one without advance/retard controls built onto it) because if you're on the red tick that means your timing is right... With a digital advance/retard gun you shoot off the white TDC tick, therefore if you had this style of gun something is off... It sounds like everything is set tho... How does the motor run now?

i have a Z6 and a standard gun.

the car seems to run pretty good, I can't hear and detonation, as I could when I had it off a tooth before (long story, but fixed that a while ago)

but the car seems to studder around low RPM's suscha s takign off, of shifting too eary. maybe i am paraniod, I'll have to check it again tonight. (this is becoming to common)

thanks for yoru help Kataku2k3, hopefully i figure out soemthign soon.

excuse the diry car. but here are some pics. I think that soemthign is wrong other than my timing the marks seem to line up good. whn i checked it last.

it is slightly off due to the angle of the picture.

my dizzy position, the blue line is where it was before i removed it for my new o-ring

here are my timing marks on the crank, so about the small pic.

my tach is still reallyjumpy and i have been having problems with it for a whiel and thougth i fixed it, so I am goign to look at that again. I took the dizzy off and maybe moved sa wire tot hte wrong position. who knows

thanks guys.

Well your timing looks good to me from the pics... But I think the next best thing would be to try swapping distributors (just to test) if at all possible... You say you "may have moved a wire to the wrong position when you took the dizzy off", did any of the pins fall out? Because of the way it's acting, "stumbling" a little, it just makes me think that it's something else too... How are the cap and rotor on your current dizzy? Spark plugs? Beyond that there's really is a lot of other things to check into, wiring, etc. Good Luck again, let me know what you can do and if anything seems to work...
