Default "Worst custom turbo ever"

Please check out the "Kills" section to reference this post. I would have posted there but no n00bs allowed.

I am the owner of the car touted as "the worst custom turbo ever". Before you start flaming again, let me explain everything that is going on.

I am a student at the University of Washington. I am training to become a Mechanical engineer. I am 24 years old and have more than 6 years of honorable service in the USMC.

Recently, I have been trying to R& D exactly what would be required to build a custom turbo system for a Kia Rio. (This is both a school project and just something fun to do) The first stage of this project, which I am still in, is to design an exhaust system to mount said T-25 turbocharger to said vehicle. Obviously, before I start making boost, there is a whole lot more work to do. I need to figure out, mostly, how to eek enough fuel out of the Rio's returnless-style fuel system to operate the turbo even at the moderate boost I am aiming for.

Thus, what I did was to take the O2 housing and turbine housing from the DSM T-25 turbocharger and used it as a method to fabricate the header and downpipe. First, I created a simple flat manifold to mount it. It required the least amount of welding (a skill which I am by no means an expert), and was simple to design. I have been running this header for about two months.

The header design is not working for me. I keep losing the inlet gasket. I figure this is the case because I have too much stress on that part of the assembly, with basically the entire exhaust system hanging from it. So, I have been building a new inverted-manifold header, but it is still under construction so I am stuck with the defective header.

Remember, this is a rough prototype! Never did I plan to make it pretty, and I gather, besides the obvious confusion with my lack of a compressor section or cartridge, the biggest flame was the "shoddy" condition of the thing. Well, you'll just have to give me that one. Like I said, beauty was not a goal of the build, I am simply trying to see what works. So if you must continue to flame me, go ahead. I will live. Let me just ask, how many people who responded to the post in the Kills section have ever designed and built their own turbo system from the ground up? I doubt there are many, because there are tons of off-the-shelf parts available to you. Those who have, in all likelyhood, are professionals who are not satisfied with the level of performance of the available stock and aftermarket pieces, and likely have the experience to build some beautiful, race-worthy turbocharger systems. But even then, at least you guys have systems for adjusting fuel, already have flanges available for construction, et al.

Here are just a few corrections from that post:

1) My car does not have turbo stickers anywhere. Jeff made that up just to make me look like a ricer.

2) I don't have a "big ***" boost gauge. I have a little 2-1/16" gauge that isn't even powered up or connected to anything. I installed this along with a tachometer in a cluster bezel I made, because I will eventually need it.

3) That is not JB weld. Obviously JB weld would not hold up under exhaust temperatures. It is sodium silicate, which does an excellent job of sealing exhaust leaks. Again, having problems with gaskets. This "ghetto" system is keeping it together until I get the other header done.

4) The socket was my bad. After tightening the bolt up the socket would not come off. I never figured it would get onto the internet.

5) I am not some dumb kid. I explained above.

6) Yes, my mother was there, but as a witness on my behalf, because I did check all my fuses before I brought it in, in her presense as well as my brother's. I am close with my falmily, and since my mother is clinically insane, I have moved back close to her while I am going to college to help take care of her.

7) The work, whatever it was, was covered under warantee. I brought it in without changing anything because I know legally my electrical warantee cannot be denied based on modifications to the intake and exhaust system. Despite what Jeff asserts, it was not a blown fuse. It was my belief (and still is) that they were just trying to get me for the $90 "diagnostic fee" and made up something that they thought they could easily pin on me. Look up the Magnuson-Moss Warantee improvement act of 1996 for information on what I just said.

As a finale to this, I contacted the service manager at the dealer, where Jeff (the mechanic) works and where I brought the car in for service. He knows as well as I do that Jeff commited several crimes. I cannot say anymore on this for now.

BTW, here are some pics of the header I am building now. Again, please don't flame my welds. Yes, they are rough, but they are also sound. I just started welding recently, and I really have cheap equipment. (110 volt flux-core gasless wire feed)

Oh, and on a positive note, thank you whomever found this, because Jeff was "smart" enough to delete the original page once he figured out he could get in trouble for it. So because some here wanted to flame me, they actually gave me what I needed to ensure the parties involved don't get away scot free.

Hell yeah man! Good for you! Your right. I bet less than 2% of the people on this board have the actual working knowlegde that you do.

It looks like *** but like you said F--- IT! Its just an experiment, you are not trying to prove anything to anyone, like 98% of the people here.

My hats off to you and I would be lying if I didnt say that the original post was the source of some 100% pure humor, but now that you've had a chance to elaborate on this beauty, all I have to say is good luck on the project, feel free to use this site as a database for additional info and questions you may have, and please keep us posted as to what you learn.

You could potentially make this one of the most memorable threads EVAR!

..what a puss. Are you serious with this nonsense? So because you got your little feelings hurt, you think you have to realiate? Give me a break. You realize had you just let this whole situation die, it would have done just that. But no you have to be barney bad *** and try to start things, while in the process, only making yourself look worse.

No one honestly cares about how good or bad your setup is. It would have been forgotten... thanks for making your WORST TURBO KIT EVER live on forever. ::golf claps::

Well, all I can say is that I can tell who the educated ones are on this forum and who the idiots are. Enough said.

Here's a picture of the new manifold in the car:

And then I made some wires for the car by using Cheap-O APC Civic wires, trimming them and crimping new terminals on:

And believe it or not, the painter's tape "intake connectors" work just fine. FYI, I just didn't have enough connectors to finish the intake and have ordered more.

Keep up the good work! I know through personal experience how tricky welding can be. I think that your manifold looks good! I was expecting a simple log manifold because of simplicity, but you've got an all-out header!

Looks good!

you are mocking up a turbo setup but you arent doing anything. There is no compressor side. you have a turbine side for no reason.. basically it makes little to no sense why you wouldnt have the turbine side and just finish the turbo project. You cant control your fuel? There is something called an AFC. works with any car with a map sensor. You are testing everything for fitment? why the hell would you connect intake lines with painters tape?????

Basically i read your half assed excuses that lack sense and reason. You my friend are a moron, and btw, your manifold is going to crack in half having the turbo put that much weight on the runners. i hope you ran the thickest pipes you could find and MAYBE if god likes you it wont crack the manifold in half.

Again, you are a moron that lacks all logic. BAH!
