help on identifying ECU, etc...
just wanted to say wassup to all. As you can tell i am new to this site. If you all dont mind me asking for help, i have the following questions...
how can you identify a GSR ECU, i know the code is P72. But is there a different code or other numbers besides P72 for 94-95 and higher models?
If i am not mistaken, the 94-95 GSR ECU and motor has no knock sensor right???
last, the reason for these questions is because... we did a swap on my friends hatch. When he picked up the motor, we were sure that the motor was from a 95 GSR. only thing is that, we are uncertain if the ECU is from the same car. Right now, the CHECK ENGINE light pops up from time to time and dissappears. He flashed it for the code and i think he said it was a code 23..."KNOCK SENSOR".. now if i am right, the 94-95 has no knock sensor, so is it possible that they may have given him a 96 and up GSR ECU?? I figure the light would be on because we have no wires hooked up to a non-existing knock sensor, but the ECU is equipped with it..
ANY answers or help would be greatly appreciated!!!

a search would have been nice for this subject
but hey
its your lucky day...
all p72's have knock sensor and if you did pick up the swap
complete all you have to do is plug it in.
if you dont feel like dealing with the knock sensor
pick up a chipped p28 to run a DOHC set up
but at the same time you will have to lose the dual stage intake manifold.
p72 obd1 3 plugs
p72 obd2 4 plugs

Identifying ecu's can be tricky if your not familiar with them. 94-95 only came out with an obd1 p72 gsr ecu. This ecu only came in a 5 speed. The top row of numbers should say: 37820-p72-A00 (or A01 and maybe A02). The Letter may be different depending on what country the ecu came from. All the 96+ GSR ecu's will say 37820-p72-A03 etc. There are 2 types of obd2 as well. 96-99 integras are obd2A, while the 00-01 integras are obd2B. As for the knock sensor, all GSR's come with the knock sensor. To disable the knock sensor, a chipped p28 ecu will work, but like the last post stated, your seconaries in the stock gsr intake manifold would be disabled. My check engine light came on after I did my skunk2 intake manifold install. Come to find it, it was my knock sensor. It ended up breaking in the middle of the install.....just replaced it and no more check engine light. If you have any more questions, feel free to PM me.
