Default k20a2 vs k20a

which would be a cheaper but more effective way to upgrade my base rsx...

k20a2 w/ after market cams (if there are any) and jdm DC5r intake manifold
or
Just a whole k20a swap

reasons i'm asking this is cuz i've been searching around and k20a2 motors are a lot cheaper than k20a motors. What would you guys prefer?

Get the Type R motor. because everyone who has a A2 is going to put Type R parts on it anyways.

It depends if you want the higher compression pistons of the K20A? Also, how much will you be saving by going K20A2 instead of K20A? If you can get a K20A2, swap all the K20A components over to it, and still save money in the end, i would just pick up the K20A2. Are we talking complete motors with tranny, ECU, and all that good stuff?

I would probablygo with the cheaper swap (K20A2) then just upgrade with a Toda kit or something and the ITR manifold...You might be at @235-240 whp

Of course with the basic CAI, and cat-back exhaust also.

get the k20a2. You are going to save at least 1 or 2 grand easy by going with the k20a2. The only type R part you are going to want to put on there is the IM and possibly the cams. The cams make up most of the power difference, but there are better ones out there. k20a2 is definately the way to go. However, it would probably be as cheap to just go and trade in your car for a type S.

k20a will run you 5-6 grand just for the engine

I don't know about it costing so high, I was looking at complete swaps recently around $4500.

if u have the $$ go with K20A, u can't go wrong with the complete (engine, tranny, lsd) swap. but if on a budget, RSX-S build up is just as sweet (CAI, reflash, headers, catback, right gear ratios, lsd) and lower compression than K20A, u can go turbo... all and all it depends on what u want 2 do N.A. or forced induction, budget...

Go BIG kid Good Luck...

not really down for a turbo...and how much does the toda kit go for the k20a2? if it's decently priced then i'd rather go that way.

i'm lookin to spend 6k on everything...

I think the best way to go is to get type r heads. It's less expensive than the engine. The heads are the only difference between the base and the type r.`

WTF -

um.. i think you forgot about the high compression pistons (in the block) Limited slip differential, better gearing (i think - someone back me up), better flowing intake mani, & exhaust mani on TOP of the head & cams

seen them for $4500 complete swap before from guys on this board

if later on you upgrade past ITR cams (i.e. toda) you'll make much more power starting with a k20a b/c those cams NEED high compression

toda "kit" is labout $2,000 i THINK - cams, valve springs, ECU flash (not including pistons, header)
EDIT
here is some more info for those who are too damn lazy to search - a (mustang) dyno of a k20a2 with toda kit (those unfamilar with dynos - mustang dynos read estimated 5-10% less than dynojets) 187whp (mustang)

more food for thought - dyno jdm k20a custom header & re-flash

Last i checked from Prototyperacing they do not make a race header for Rsx... but last time i checked was a while ago so i could be wrong... disregard if info is wrong.

I don't believe they do & wasn't trying to imply that this was on a RSX - its from a lotus & I posted it to show others the potential of the jdm k20a with some bolt-ons & ecu reflash
