Default question about unusual low end lag

i got my ls last march and i didn't really pay attention to the low end pull much. but when i took it autocrossin a few times i noticed my low end pull sucked. It is basiclly stock with a removed resignator. i believe that's the problem but when i tried on my friends aem short ram it was fairly the same. The wierd thing is, it pulls like hell in the top end... enlighten me please..

Welcome to the wonderful world of Honda motors. Having no low end power is typical. But what you can do to see if yours is unusually low is drive another LS and see how it responds down low.

By the way, welcome to Honda-Tech.

The LS motor actually has decent torque when compared to other B series motors. However, it also has higher gearing, which might make it feel like it has less torque.

My friend is actually willing to trade me for his gsr tranny cuz he's selling the car (he has an ls motor in a gsr body cuz the car didn't come wit a motor n dat wut he could afford, so he didn't care about da tranny.) Anyways, would that make a difference in torque transfer to da wheels: worst or better? I drove dat car n it felt like it had a stronger pull at the low end but dat could be just his car.. so wut do u think? a go on the gsr tranny..?

a lighter flywheel can help your car get up to higher rpms faster.

Is this your first Honda? (Not counting any of their 6 cyls)

B series motors are definitely strange at first, especially if you are coming from driving a domestic car (huge emphasis on the low-end).

the gsr tranie will feel like you put a good 20hp on the car. the gearing in ls tranies is awfull for all motor, way too long. if you put the gsr in youll be much happier. type r and si tranies are even closer. i put a gsr tranie in my buddys ls and it really felt like a good 20hp

LS motors (b18b) aren't really known for their high-end power so I'm not sure what's going on. For what I know and experience, B18b in general make their power earlier along the RPM so they tend to do fairly well in the low-mid range. I've seen LS take GSRs from 1st-->2nd but because they lack the more aggressive high-lift cams (VTEC), GSRs will take them on 3rd.

Getting a new tranny might be good idea too. The GSR tranny will basically give you more torque to the ground because the gears are shorter and the FD is higher (4.266 ---> 4.4). So assuming that if you make 110lbs at 4000rpm, you would make about 1515 lbs/ft (110x3.230x4.266) on first with the LS tranny and about 1548lbs/ft (110x3.20x4.4) on first with a GSR tranny. A 33lb/ft difference. =P

But getting a new tranny is just part of it. The GSR tranny might drop you into your powerband better too.

What size wheels do you have?

There isn't much you can do about the low speed corners that you take in 2nd. Downshifting into 1st isn't worth it so you just gotta wait for the power coming out of the corner. Emphasize taking the widest line to maintain your speed would help, and ride with a good Miata driver to see how they do it as they don't have any low end power either.

Cheers,
Sean
