Default ~~~ scratches in sleeves after rebuild / break in.... who's fault? ~~~

a little history:
i bought a d16z6 with the intention to boost it. i wanted it to be able to hold 15psi reliably, so i a bought srp/eagle (std bore). i had a shop put them in. they dont do the machine work in house, but they did assemble it.
when i got it back (supposed to be drop in and drive) the timing looked off by 1 tooth. so i set that and dropped it in.
as for break in, the shop said dont rev over 5k. after we had the motor in we took it out and ran it through a few gears brought it back and checked timing. everything was good. compression check was ~150 +/- 1 on all 4 cylinders (im 6500 ft up, if this matters) after ~15-20 miles. i continued to drive it regular ( there is only ~25-30 miles on it after the rebuild) when i noticed the HG was leaking.
today i pulled the head off (gonna get it checked for any warping) and noticed that one of the sleeves had a bunch of scratches on it. (see pic)
my question is, where did these scrathes on sleeves come from? rings?
why are they there? does it look like a machine problem or a installation problem? why?
could it have been the way it was broke in?
what do i do next? does this mean another rebuild?

any info on what/why/how all this happened would be great.
thanks for your help,
kelly

heres the pics:

edit: this is all different pics of the same sleeve, #4 if it matters

Was anything done with the bore before installing the new pistons? Those marks look exactly like what I would expect to see on a high milage motor that had never been apart or bored or honed.

I agree, it looks like they just took the old internals out and put the new ones in without honing the cylinders.

they did not bore it, the pistons are std bore. they honed the cylinders, because i pulled the block/head apart to paint them and we checked the hone while it was apart.
does it not look bad? i can feel them with my fingernail.

speedimage/mo did the assembly, if your looking for someone to build your block pm me and ill tell you all you need to know about most "import" shops in c. springs and denver, but i forgot the machine shop off the top of my head.

Was your car boosted during the break in, do you know if you were running lean at during the intial drives. Just some random thoughs, but detionation really chews up a block...

i was not boosted at the time of break in. i actually think i was running alittle rich ( im 6500 ft up in altitude). breack in was done with a stock ecu.
would detonation leave scractes in the sleeve like that?
im think maybe the guy that assembled the block didnt clean everything good. look like somethin was cought from underneath.
the scrathes do not go above top ring, which would make me think it wasnt something sucked into the engine?

It's possible that they didn't clean every last bit, perhaps there was a little tiny bit of dirt/metal shavings sitting on/around that #4 piston ring, or on the intake valves or whatever.

Either way, you should take it back to the shop and tell them exactly what happened. It's kinda wierd that the headgasket started leaking too...

My dad is a mechanic he says you usually should disregard that, what you should look for is check to make sure that the pistons haven't been chewed up, or are missing pieces around the outside where they mahe contact with the sleeve. Also, you probably wanna keep those rpms a little bit lowered at leats for the first 600miles. If the pistons are intact then you're ok, just put a new head gasket and continue breaking in the piston rings.

Well, I think you should measure the cylinders for out of round and taper. If they arent perfectly straight, you'll never get good ring seal as tehy will wear improperly and the engine will suck soon.

thanks for the help everyone, ima call the shop and see what they say.
they better fix this, there is no way it is my fault.

so no one thinks that the sleeves are trashed?
depending on what the shop says, i may out it back together and see what the compression tests show.

since you didnt bore the cylinders, looks like you possibly have a cylinder that is out of round. or you had detonation. is it just that one cylinder? if so, how does the injector flow test? how did you know you were running rich? wideband?
