Default New guy, new teg, new question

Hello everyone on H-T... I've been a reader for awhile and have been too lazy to jump in on anything but here goes>>>

Recently traded in my old **** box 89 prelude (4ws o yea~) and picked up a 95 GS-R... I'm pretty happy with it and have done some basic things:

dropped, CAI, mp3 player and some boston acoustics, also painted clear corners (those are a little iffy, not too sure if they should stay) also have red tail lights and repainted back bumper (thnx drunken nieghbor), its in the shop now having a exedy organic race clutch put in... I plan on having the typical 98+ front w/ a itr lip or some other lip.

My main concern other than busting out onto the scene is the crap my mechanic is saying about my axles. I talked to him about doing some general upkeep work on the car and he said I would have to replace my axles soon... I didn't think it was entirely necesary since the car only has 83,XXX miles on it and I checked through the maintenance record book thingie the car came with and it didn't have any recommended replacement days. Is the guy trying to milk me or is it possible that such an underpowered/untuned car would actually need a new set of axles? and finally to get another question out there : What kinda axles would you guys suggest for someone interested in only mild=moderate performance???

Thank you, enjoy>

thank you, no instant rejection... Its a generic coilover combo w/ stock struts (ebay special )... I want to upgrade once I find a little more money or mug a leprechaun but for now, it suits its purpose

are you sure you didnt take pics of my car? i also have a black 95 gsr i just put on some blades and it looks so much better, so dont have and pics or know how to post them but looks nice. get a camber kit. nice pic host pics come up fast and you dont have to look for them. and to answer your question stock honda axles are actually pretty strong if you dont do a big power adder or slicks dont upgrade. and no you should not need axles until you get to at least 150,000+ miles. i replaced them on my second gen at 170k only cause the boots busted, the axles were still good and i drove the car HARD every day for four years. and on my third gen i have gone to the track with drag radials and launched on nitrous with no probs you just have to be careful on sticky tires. i got my third gen with 137,000 and it had one boot torn on the DS axle, and i just put on a new boot. on the second gen i put new axles from NAPA and that was a big mistake i went through 7 in a short period of time. if the boots leak or tear just put new boots as long as they are not clicking.

eh...if your axles aren't clicking or anything and your boots are still pretty clean, and there's not grease being flung all over the engine bay then I wouldnt worry about it.

Your axles should be cool as long as you aren't running slick or there isn't a clicking sound. 80,000 miles isn't much for axels. Welcome to H-T.

welcome to H-T and congrats on the new ride. Looks like you've got a plan... that's definatly a good start... as was the CAI, camber kit, etc... the coilovers and stock struts... they'll be ok for a while, just read up and pick a good spring/strut combo or coilover cause your current setup, as i'm sure you realize, isn't going to last forever...

as for your axles, like everyone else has told you... they're fine. i've taken stock axles mid 10's in the quarter..... with 140k miles on them....

as mentioned above, you need to replace an axle only if it's flinging grease all over the place, clicking, or just flat out breaks..... until then, have fun! they don't just break so you shouldn't have to be worried about replacing them like you would your timing belt....

if i was in your position, which i was at one time, i would buy some cam gears (i'm happy with all the aem's i've ever bought) and install them at the same time you do your timing belt and water pump. i didn't do mine until 120k miles but i was an idiot... 100k is about average so you've got plenty of time to think about it.

good luck and welcome to H-T

Regards,
Erik

I didn't start having problems with my axles until about 118K. I had them both reworked (not replaced) due to the fact that the CV boots were leaking. As previous users have said, you'll know when your axles are having issues. I'd say just have the CV boots checked out. There's no real need to "fix" something that isn't yet broke, unless you have money to throw around of course.

Sorry kiddo, the name is what my girl calls the integra > its the Vicious Vixen since my last car was a real bitch < I just about had to replace everything on that goddamn prelude, a new b20 was just the start of things...not that it matters now !

This is what it looks like under the hood for those curious : thats a black injen intake too (not rattlecan job, it came powdercoated )
