damn, car overheating, need input...
ok great
so now my brakes are shot,
car is making a screaching noise even when i'm not braking, and especially when going in reverse(i'm hoping its just somehting like a fucked up rotor or soem **** rubbing on something, but I duno).
and now on my drive home the damn car decides to start overheating.
I have a feeling its just low on coolant.
but thats the thing, I'm always feeding it coolant.
and it keeps wanting more.
i'm not sure exactly how much i have to keep adding, but definetely its losing coolant, and i'm not sure why.
it does NOT leak!
what could be a reason for this?
I used to havea big 272 deltacam in my engine(d15b7 in 93 dx hatch, manual tranny) but I just recently put the stock cam back in.
I still need to do the timing though, but it seems to drive/idle fine.
any input would be greatly appreciated.

your brakes are screeching probably because your pads are worn down. but one time my teg was screeching real bad and it turned out that there was a rock stuck between the dust shield and rotor.
if youre losing coolant and its not leaking onto the ground, then youve got a bad headgasket. look at your oil. take the valve cover off. smell it. does it smell like rotten eggs. does it look thick and have a light chocolate color?

haha yea ive had that happen to me.. took me a week to figure out what the hell was making the screeching sound. lol then when i found out, i felt like an idiot.

Yeah, I get the screaching thing in the brakes all the time. Almost always on a gravel driveway. As soon as I hear it I stop and back up a few feet and usually that just pops the rock out.
As far as the coolant thing do like someone said previously and check your oil to see if it is milky at all. A good thing to try before tearing the head off to do the head gasket is just re torque the head bolts. Sometimes if they have loosened a hair over time or the gasket just compresses over time you can re torque the head and it will re seal itself.

Ah!
ok, very good input,
i'll check the dust shield tonight.
My oil doesnt really smell bad,
but it does get that dark chocolate color,
I just figured oil does that, I mean, isnt it natural for it to get dirty after a while?
headgasket huh.. hmm, that would be interesting.
I'll try re-torqueing the bolts, hopefully that'll at least help some if it is in fact the gasket. Could it be anything else?
OH and yes my pads are definetely toast,
but the screeching happens when i'm not on the brakes also,
so it may be the dust shield or a rock stuck in there also.
I need new rotors/pads right now too(or at least resurfaced rotors).

if you let the brake pads wear down far, they will screech all the time, and not just when hitting the brakes. and if they are, you are definetly going to fudge your rotors up...
so your oil is dark? then your head gasket is prolly fine. cuz when the coolant mixes with the oil, it looks like chocolate milk. are you sure there are no leaks on the ground? your water pump could be bad. it would only leak when your car is running. i just changed mine on my teg cuz it was shot. when they go out, they have weep holes in them where it lets the coolant leak out.

if its a bad headgasket, u wont necessarily have milky oil. i overheated like crazy and i couldnt figure out what it was, so i said **** it and changed my headgasket and headstuds. no more overheating for me... but do the easy ones first: thermoswitch, thermostat, bleed coolant.

yes a bad head gasket can make the coolant leak internaly and mix with the oil or it could leak externaly. but he said theres no coolant leaking onto the ground.
he hasnt said if his car is overheating. if its overheating real bad, the coolant could just be boiling away..

but didnt he just say he loses coolant and overheats? thats exactly what happened to me, and i didnt have milky oil...just white smoke out of my exhaust, no other leaks.

my bad, he did say he was overheating. if the coolant is just boiling away from overheating, then you need to find out why it is overheating.

yeah its not overheating too bad,
I drove home in stop/go traffic with it overheating,
the needle would get to the top, then go back down then go back up again.
I'd just pop my hood, blast the heater and try to coast.
when I top off the coolant it'll be fine for a while(like a month or so.. MAYYBE 2,
hard to tell exactly the rate of loss).
its only when the coolant gets low that I have problems with overheating.
and there is no leakage, or at least not enough to form any sort of puddle when the car is sitting, or soak a part of the engine bay.
HOWEVER there is a part of my engine that is constantly "moist"
the area under the dizzy, on top of the tranny, and a bit on the side of the head.
But it may just be residue from spilled oil from when I was messing with the cam and valves.
About the brakes,
i'm glad to hear that they'll make noise even when brakes arent applied!
thats probably it!
And yeah, its not good for the rotors, but I'm replacing them regaurdless because I'm pretty sure they're warped, or at least they WERE warped.
maybe from the previous owner torqueing the lugs down in some ridiculous fashion, I duno.
thanks again for all the feedback, this is very helpful!

the head gasket could be leaking there...do a compression test and report back here with the results.

aaahh ****,
was afraid of that,
I knew i'd need to do a compression check one of these days,
as i'm going turbo soon enough.. dont really feel like doin it though.
I want to mess with my car. .but damn life is just pilin up
also i'd have to go and buy the compression test stuff, or pay some1 to do it

Alright,
compression test done
1. 197
2. 190
3. 190
4. 200
looks pretty damn good to me!
especiall for a car with 9:2 compression
although the engine was only luke warm, it was sitting for a while
while I read up on how to do the test.
I have a feeling maybe the water pump is bad
because I had the dizzy flipped 180 for a minute,
and tried cranking it alot before I realized.
From what I hear, that can damage the water pump

is the water pump making any whining noises? get under the car and look up around the timing belt side of the engine. do you see any signs of coolant droplets or anything? when a water pump goes bad it will whine or leak coolant out of the weep holes.
