ummm i just bought my ek hatch and i want to do an oil change, i heard that hondas have crush gaskets that have to be used new with each oil change for the drain plug, i know for my talon i could just put my plug back in and i didnt need a crush washer or something

do i need it for the honda and are they only available at teh dealer?

 

i don't use a crush washer when i change my oil, jus screw the plug back in, mine doesn't leak.

 

I havent changed mine yet, just change it when it starts looking bad.

 

yeh, the honda plug gasket crushes when u torque them. i just use a regular 14mm cooper instead..but they are pretty cheap anyways.

You always want to use a washer otherwise your drain plug is more prone to getting stripped like you mom on a Saturday night.

I was told that Honda's used crush gaskets for the oil pan, not the drain plug.

I've been changing my own oil for 5 years, never once had a leak from the plug.

 

Never used one here, never had a problem! Wait? are we talking about condoms?

 

if you buy honda oem filters(highly suggested) they will most of the time just give the washer to you for free. if not they are only like fifteen cents.

 

for all you lazy asses just flip the washer or if you really want to get nitty gritty just sand it down...f it better than not having one..

 

so can i just keep reusing the same one, it seems like a pain to drive 25 min just for a 15 cent piece

Per Honda instructions, any aluminum crush washer needs to be replaced....Its not all about the fluid leaking but also the drain plug staying put....the more you re-use them the bigger chance they could crack and more likely you'll be over-tightening the drain plug...And on the newer engines that means replacing an aluminum oil pan. Its .36 for piece of mind...

I have used the same washer that came with the car until I bought a Honda filter and it came with a new washer...doesnt make a diff I have noticed...as long as you tighten it correctly it will be fine...

For the cost, just replace it. Instead of driving 25 minutes for a 15 cent piece, go crazy and drive 25 minutes and get a dollars worth. Better yet, go absolutely nuts and get 2 or 3 dollars worth.

If you're changing your own oil, it makes sense to buy in bulk, cuz yer gonna need the stuff anyway. Case or 3 of oil, case of filters, a jar full of washers etc.

You won't have to re-up everytime you need to change your oil.

I'm currently experimenting with a product called "Sure Drain" by Fram. You replace your stock DP with theirs, which has an actuator valve in it. When you want to change your oil, you screw on a short length of hose that comes with the kit, it opens the valve and out comes your old oil into the jug you've supplied. So far I love it; it's quicker and there are no tools needed.

It's 12 bucks at Walmart and the one for a D16 oil pan is the SD-2, since there are 5 different ones, I believe. Just make sure you run the car first b/c hot oil is far less viscous than cold oil and the drain time will be reduced significantly.

You should be able to get them anywhere. I paid a dollar for a bag of 20 at Auto Boyz or Pep Zone, which I think was the wrong price, but I didn't argue.

 

Never done that before. Its prolly just something shops tell you to do to sqeeze and few more bucks out of you.

 

dealerships tell you to use them so they can make extra money when i was at honda i never told the people that bought oil filters that they needed you should be fine with out one

 

yeah it's just a regular washer anyways so you don't overtighten the drain plug and strip the pan out. spec 32 foot lb's
