Default How much WHP do I need to achieve 13.5 quarter mile runs ??

Guys, I did a search and the results were kind of shady. Here's the deal, I am pulling the head off my ITR and giving it a performance head-job including upgraded valve train. I haven't considered cams yet but I do have a loooong list of things going on the car (JDM 4-1, Carsound cat, Comptech IceBox, AEM pulleys, AEM cam gears, AEM FPR, MSD-SCI, MSD Blaster2, MSD 8.5mm wires, Denso Iridium plugs, Mugen thermostat, Mugen radiator cap, Mugen thermoswitch, V-AFC, Hondata IM gasket, and a few other things I don't recall off the top. After all is installed, the car will be dyno-tuned. Some of these parts are already installed, others will be soon. My goal is to run mid-13 second passes on the quarter mile with daily-driven Azenis tires. Will this setup get me there ?? I am open to suggestions on cams. I am NOT messing with the lower end (pistons) but I am increasing compression by modifying the head. I am also planning on using a Mugen twin-loop exhaust. I know the Mugen is not the best flowing system but it is an improvement over stock and it is quiet.

So, how much power am I going to need to reach mid-13's ?? Anyone ??

Its all in the "launch". Ive got over 200whp and cant break 13's Mostly because of traction, crappy clutch, wheel hop, and not knowing how to "launch" the car. Ive been working on a few things and this season I will be in the low 13s on street tires. Drag is just for fun though as I like to mess with some of those big scary mean V8s out there

Bring that thing down here for a weekend with some parts i suggest, ill get that thing in the 13's. traction is a PITA in these cars, but i think i got it down over the years , ive only had about 900 runs on this car, lol.

I had 179 whp (Dynojet) on street tires and ran a 13.8. I bet with slicks a good driver could do it with even less. Street tires I'd say 190 is a safe goal to ensure it being doable. Launch is everything as mentioned.

I forgot to mention I have some tuning issues that make it VERY hard for me to launch and hit the next gear without losing RPM. Im looking forward to the Spring.

Im workin on it, dyno time is not cheap y0!

I got a nasty hesitation issue off idle or when romping on the gas WOT (ie, hitting the next gear). Its going lean for a split second no matter how much fuel I add... Its complicated and Im workin on it

HMMM , weird. how lean is it going? does it break up at all in the upper RPM ranges?
You dont even really gotta get in the dyno , just have someone help you with the partial throttle maps.

been there, done that

It goes lean enough that sometimes, if its just idling, and I romp on the gas real quick WOT, RPM will drop and it will stall or it will stutter and then RPM will rise up like normal. PITA to say the least and you can imagine how hard it is to drive from stop lights, stop signs, parking spaces, etc lol

wideband installed...it goes bone dry lean at tip in. otherwise, its running rich around from about 13.5 to 12.5 AFR in higher RPM. Its streetable enough to drive and Ive learned how to drive it so its not too bad. But watching my friends try to drive it is entertaining lol. I havent fugged with it in awhile so Im gonna try to take care of it soon.

back to topic, dont forget that PEAK HP is not always the best. If you can get a lot more mid range by sacrificing a few on the top end, its well worth doing so.

Well, the traction issue is no surprise. With all the mods I have in mind, I should be (hopefully) over the 200whp mark which should help compensate for the street tires and "average driver" that I am . Also, even though they are not drag tires, the Azenis help a little bit with the traction problem. Is anyone else running 13s normally aspirated (no NOS!!) ?

RTW, how does your 200WHP fare up against the V8s ?? Whenever I spot a cocky V8 on the highway I like to give them a "rush"... Depending on the situation I sometimes have my share of intimidating the V8s with my 4-banger but not always

Do not have a WHP # yet but i have i/h/e and 18 deg timing and drag radials. That gave consistent 13.7's.......

try taking them from light to light. more fun .
highway racing gets too iffy. the v8's that tried to run me on thew highway you could tell they hit fuel cut too early, see a big puff of smoke then they slow down , lol. thats my exp though. i rocked a Corba pretty bad on the way home from RI. he gave me a decent run though

Remember elevation plays a big part of e/t's and damn from what it sounds like, you guys live close to sea level, where i live its 5500ft. above sea level :-( but i ran a 14.2 with a crappy clutch @3000 ft. above sea level, but that time should be easily overcome when I go again :-)

I ran many 13.7 passes with just bolt ons and using Brigestone RE540s tires doing 2.1 and 2.0 60 ft. With and set of slick you can make 1.8 / 1.9 60FT easily and run mid 13s. But take care of your axles

I did a 13.7 on street tires with a 2.3 60ft on crappy Toyo FZ4s street tires (300 Treadwear).... With drag radials, I know I could probably do a 13.5 or better...

I made 188 whp and 134 tq... see link in signature for setup..
