Rust on the shift linkage

Rust on the shift linkage
i just bought a used del sol vtec shift linkage today and theres a bunch of rust up where the shifter is. what can i do to get rid of this? will sanding it down and primering it be good enough?

Yes, you can sand off the rust.
However, I would suggest something like rustolem or some other hard based paint. Primer is to pourous to prevent future rusting.
