I thought they only came in large and small? Just use the small ones.

I read a little bit on these oil filters and supposedly the smaller one than the factory would increase the oil psi a little bit but still have better filtering.

Hamp makes three. One a bit longer than stock (H1540-PR3-408), one the same size as stock (H1540-POH-004) and one a bit shorter than stock (H1540-PFB-004). The smallest one is the one that's reported to maintain oil pressure better during VTEC engagement.

H1540-PFB-004 works fine, not enough of a size difference to change the oil pressure.
Using these filters on a car that normally uses the Large filter (Ex: B18C) would keep the Spikes and Dips in Oil Pressure to a minimum, this is normally seen when VTEC engages and disengages.

so then where does the H1540-PLC-004 fit up in this mix of filters?

It Depends on where you buy them, most people buy in small quantities and resell them for about $12. We buy them in very large quantities and resell them at $6-7 depending on the amount bought by the customer.

Current Special on the Small HAMP's is 0-9 Filters $7 each, 10 or more filters and they are $6 each.

H1540-PFB-004
They work on all of the Honda Engines out there, K, B, F, etc. Series. They are well suited for use on the K Series engine which use the smaller filters than the F or B Series.
