Default JDM 4-1 Evaluation...

I've now had my JDM 4-1 header installed (correctly) for about a day now and I've definately noticed a change in performance for the better. The car seems to want to rev easier, whereas before it felt like the engine really had to work to get to redline. This could be because the fact that the JDM 4-1 actually reduces the sound of my AEM CAI from about 7K rpm up to redline. I think that to understand why this happens you have to be aware that the sound which the AEM makes isn't from sucking air in, but rather its from the report of the combustion event traveling back out the intake tract during the very brief period of valve overlap between the intake and exhaust lobes (I think, somebody correct me if I'm wrong). I suspect the reason why the JDM 4-1 causes a reduction in noise from the AEM is that there's now an easier path for the exhaust gasses to take out the exhaust ports (less backpressure?) which causes most of the noise to go out the exhaust ports instead of back up through the intake ports. Anyway that's jsut my opinion. But I like it! It's nice and quiet now toward redline and it doesn't sound like you're trying as hard.

Basically it feels like the car lost about 100lbs.

What's the most cost effective way to do that? One of those VFAC things? Sorry, I'm not really familiar with H/A's...

I use a Carsound 94006 from IPS Racing. I picked up the JDM header for $350 from a friend who works at Acura (he had to special order it). I got the upper and lower heat shields at the same time. I also spent about two days porting out the welds of the stock header at the flange. Got it TIG welded on the outside to make up for the weld material that I grinded out. It looked really trick, like the pics on D's site (www.sandmracing.com). Not sure if it helped or not, but at least it got me away from Quake 3 for a few nights, which my g/f appreciated.

How much do those cost? Are they PnP or do you have to splice wires? I'm on a budget and I told myself that I wouldn't mod the R anymore because I'm just going to trade it later on down the road if the new R comes to the US. But hey, an extra 6-9hp wouldn't hurt until then!

$295ish and only solder, try to stay away from crip connectors.

I got the V-AFc and ordered a harness form Kenji so it will drop right in, no cutting of factory wires. Harness was liek $230; a little expensive, but worth it to keep my warrenty in my opinion.

Wish I had ported and polished my JDM 4-1 header before installing it but oh well, no big deal-yo. I will buy a new header this summer anyways

I like my JDM ITR 4-1 as well. Gave me some good numbers on the super-trustworthy (that was for D) dyno too.

I'll do a skunk2 mani (I have a gs-r), cam gears, 00/01 itr cams, valve springs and shave the head before I get a VAFC...

I haven't gotten a JDM 4-1 yet, but when I installed my DC 4-1, I noticed my AEM got quieter too. Do you have a test pipe now too?
