this just started happenening yesterday, the temp. gauge will randomly go from normal to the red zone and back within 30 seconds. sometimes it will stay at the red zone for a longer while, but for the most part it just randomly fluctuates up and down.
all im trying to ask is....is my car safe to drive from san diego to LA? im going up there for my swap, but i dont know if my car can make it. its a d15b8 with a GSR double wide.
i was thinking it was my thermostat...or maybe even an electrical problem.

does the needle go red when your going slow or at idle? does it go down when your cruising? check your coolant level.
my car has a slow leak. whenever the coolant gets low the gauge will go up and down depending on my driving condiotion.

Probobly your coolant temperature sensor...
You car won't overheat and coolback down fast like that. as long as it's not sitting up there it should be fine...
Turn on the heat to be sure... if it's overheating that heat will be VERY hot.

yeah i was feeling it when the gauge was in red. it wasnt all that hot. it drops from red to normal temp within 3-5 seconds

Should be ok from SD to LA. You're getting rid of it anyway so who cares if you crack the block on the way there. Just keep the AAA card handy
So whats going in there?

I used to have so much cooling problems with my D15B. As a matter of fact I had so much blown head gaskets this one year that by the time I did my 6th one I could replace my head gasket in just 30 minutes! Hahaha!

Hey Derek,
your motor should be fine to drive up to LA, but just in case, bring some coolant and make sure your cel phone is charged up. Good luck on your swap up there, I can't wait to see it when you get it back...

Your head may need to be machined and the head gasket replaced. You may have a coolant leak. Check the hoses. Your thermostat may be slow in opening. It should be fine for freeway driving. I did that for two years with my leaky gasket. Just fill up with coolant before you leave.
Anyways, just try to get it fixed ASAP.

If its got a bad head gasket or cracked block -- you may need this product I've found. Its called Steel Seal!! It completely rocks -- I used it on my car instead of doing $1200 head gasket -- Costs $44.95 -- I love it so much I ask the company to send me some bottles so I could give away! Email me and I'll set you up!
