Default Which 5th Generation and Why?

Heres My Situation: I drive a 94 teg, im looking to sell it and buy a different car in the spring. It's up in the air between a 5th Gen Lude, a 98+ GSR, or an ITR. ITR outperforms all but I wouldnt mind trying something new. I just need some prelude info.

So, if you could buy any 5th gen (97-01 I think) Prelude which model would it be? Which options? and what year? Im also curious as to what the common problems are with preludes.

How do preludes compare with integra's?

Thanks, any info would be great

I would avoid 97, other than that a 98+ Base 5-speed they are all the same really, avoid the SH as well, too many annoying things when you want to mod.

Check for timing belt replacements and amount of oil it burns. All H22as burn some, but some more than others.

I would go with a 01, since chances are the paint would be in better condition. And all the kinks are worked out at this year. Nothing but smooth sailing.

I'm going to agree with Joel... 98+ base model. Make sure the balancer shaft seals as well as the auto-tensioner have been fixed because those were Honda re-calls.

another vote for the 98 and up base because they are lighter than the SH's and they will respond better to mods. Straight line they are also faster then the GSRs. There have been so many post about prelude vs GSR tegs in this forum and Integra forum alike that you should be able to find plenty of info using the search

What are your plans for the car? If you are planning to add alot of power avoid the SH like Satan said. If you are looking mostly for auto-x and HPDEs give the SH another look bc since you are buying it used, you may find it cheaper than some base models depending on where you look. This would also be more cost effective than installing an LSD on a base in the future.

The most common problem is the infamous 5th gear grind. Happens to some, not to others, supposedly it was resolved by 2001 but I've heard of some 2001 owners that this happened to. I have a 2001 SH with 56K and no grinding...yet.

Thanks for all the info.

Im mainly planning for some appearance stuff first if i buy a lude, a little engine stuff later on but nothing major. Also a sick stereo b/c it will be a daily driver

So some preludes grind gears? A lot of integra do that to, many people just put in some redline MTL or HOnda MTL, it fixed the grinding in mine.

Preludes smokes the GSR? Really?

Thats awesome, i think i may have made my mind up for the Prelude, unless of course an ITR comes my way, but since i live in canada that will be a rare occurance.

There is only 6 ITR's in Winnipeg, Manitoba, with a population above 600 000

I would get the ITR, but since it seems like you are planning on making it a daily driver with stereo equipment and the like id go for a 98+ base 5 speed of course. I have no complaints about my 97, but the resale value on a newer one would be slightly better.

Go w/ a 99+ Base 5-speed. 97s and some 98s had shift-fork issues in the 5-spd, and the SS is, frankly not all that interesting. I don't care too much about the SH and the ATTS unit is less forgiving of modification.

well spinning bearings isn't cool...so I consider that a major negative point. Plus it's the first year for the model...it tends to have more problems.

the only ones that ever came with leather from the factory were canadian SE models, which also had all the aesthetic (sp?) features of the SH minus ATTS. They were not offered w leather in the US but you could get it as a dealer installed option, in which case they sent it out someplace to get reupholstered I believe.
