Default need help with cam gears at TDC

well im puttin my head back together. i already lined my crank to tdc and now i need to line my cams up. i think i have the idea.... i set it to where both white arrows are pointning up and the little grooves on the cams and facing each other and level with the head. problem is.. i havent tightened down my bearing caps and the cams start wanting to lift off the head. im not sure if im suppose to line them up and fight against the cam and tighten down my bearin caps or to tighten the bearing caps then adjust my cams. but im really cautious about tightening the bearing caps down first. if i tighten them first, and go to line up my cams, wouldnt there be a chance my valves could hit the piston while rotating my cam? pleease helppppp

I don't see why you would rotate the cam...

as long as the cams are 'close enough' with the arrows pointing the general direction of up you have a lot of leeway before you could even begin to come close to the piston... so if the cams are about TDC when you tighten down the bearing caps you won't have any problems

yea but i have to fight against the cam and push it against the rocker arms and keep it down while i tighten the bearing caps. is this the right way of doing it?? i just thought i could tighten the caps down first then line up the cams afterwards

what i mean is that wen the cams are somewhat at tdc, they dont sit on the rockers evenly. but if i rotate it a little, none ofthe lobes are facing down, so it sits nice and flat. but wen i rotate it to sit if flat, it is quite a ways from tdc, so im scared i might hit pistons wen i move them back up to tdc

what u can do is, loosen all the valve adjust nuts and back off the screws to relieve pressure off the rockers
