Question about Tach redline
Does anyone know of a way to tell what your "indicated" redline is without bouncing off of the limiter? I know it's off by about +- 200rpm on the tach, but I'd like to know how to get the most out of the car when accelerating (w/o hitting the limiter). I remember seeing 8500 or 8600 before, but it happened so fast it was hard to tell
I'm also curious about this. Since our tach's are not EXACT how do you really know when to shift? I want to avoid the use of a "monster" Tach but I am interested in a very small shift light mounted inconspicuisly(sp?) somewhere. Is that a good alternative? Any recomendations on a light? Where to buy also?

Depends on how hard you are accelerating. You'll see a higher indicated rpm when running full throttle from a stop than a third gear drop, for example, because the tach has less time to catch up. From a start I've hit as high as an indicated 8700 in second (one of our other members is on video hitting 8900!). But then again I bumped the rev limiter at 8600 doing a second gear drop one time. You just have to get a feel for your car and do it on instinct IMO. I've only hit the limiter one other time only because I wasn't paying attention.
it is funny that I have the same Question this morning..
I felt that my R is slow...but now I think that's because I was so afraid of hitting the Rev limiter..
so in daily driving, I never really takes it to more than 8000 RPM(on the Tach)...
This morning, I really hit it..
VTEC goes on at exactly 6K on the Tach..
Goes up to 8800 RPM, not cut out yet... I think I hit a little less than 9K RPM where the bwap-bwap sounds was heard..
so.. the official rev limiter is at 8600 RPM, right? then, my Tach is off a little at the higher RPMs.. because the cut off is at 8900-9000 RPM...
EDIT: SO.. that RSX-S Beat me because I shifted at around 7600 RPM(indicated 8000 on my tach, but the engine is actually at 7600)
Now I see..
good excuse, eh? hehehe...
hm... Yeah, I need a light or a better gauge..
does Mugen or Spoon cluster have a light where it tells you when it really near the Rev Limiter?(sorta like Gran Turismo 3). hehehe

Seems like this would be a good "free" mod since people may not be revving as high as they can and losing out on 200 extra rpms! I'm always worried about going over 8400 as indicated by the tach

I would get a shift light if you plan on revving to redline a lot. Too bad they don't make one that mounts to the steering wheel like the F1 cars.
Bumping the rev limiter doesn't necessarily hurt your engine, but it might screw up the valvetrain and drivetrain if you do it repeatedly. The rev limiter (in the ecu) regulates what the highest safe rpm is, and when you go over that, it cuts the gas for a split second, causing the 'explosions' to stop happening. Prolonged exposure to redline can cause excess wear on the cams, valves, crankshaft, etc and cause bad things to happen. Fortunately much testing has been done with this so people usually only run into problems when the redline is raised and the valvetrain hasn't been strengthened as well
I'm seeing the fuel cut closer to 9k rpm indicated on the factory tach. I'd say right at 8800-8900. V-AFC usually reports a cut right at 8600, if I get that high. With stock valvetrain and Toda B's, I try to keep it under 8200
Found it at this website http://www.t-sport.com/
Don't know anything else about it. Looks cool though.
