Default Weak Spot : Tranny

All,

I've heard the weakspots of Integs (and maybe all hondas) is the tranny. Is there anything we could do to the tranny so it doesn't need to be dropped and opened (sychro issues, etc.) very frequently. I tried NEO synthetic tranny fluid, but switched back to honda fluid after I needed to have a sychro replaced. Anything?

Thanks,
jon

Yeah, don't squeeze the juice while shifting!

Yo since you guys are on the issues of tranny, I have a weak tranny as well. I race so it's like hit or miss sometimes. My shifter seems to have a lot of play, moves around too much. I get a scratch everyother race in 3rd and now which I think is 5th as well in Vtec only. I got cash trying to fix this , any help would be great.

I'd argue the Honda manual trannies are very strong. Go visit the NASOIC boards and find out how easy it is to blow up a WRX transmission or even VW's for that matter have lots of synchro problems because of the dehlrin material they use or the TFS problem where the roll pin on the diff comes loose. Much more common to have problems on other manufacturers manual transmission than a honda. Honda's aren't unbreakable, but are better than most of the competition

-flush the tranny fluid often
-push the clutch all the way down

The weak link is the clutch disc... and the loose nut behind the wheel.

LOL! I was watching that movie where Pauly Shore (Crawl?) goes to some hick town for Thanksgiving with his college chick. Funny stuff.

You're not supposed to 'slam' the shifter into palce. you are supposed to do it slowly/medium speed, not forcibly. I have NEVER had problems with my shifter unless I'm not paying attention. These transmissions will last a long time if they are used properly.

An instructor I had once told me you shouldn't be shifting with more force than you can muster up with two fingers on the shift ****. Haven't had an issue since then....

On a constructive note ... the ES Shifter bushing set seems to help, along with the inserts for the engine mounts!

Great advice!!! My tranny was grinding from 2-3 and 3-4 at redline on the track, so I replaced my syncros and it is like butter. I try not to slam my gears when shifting out there, but sometimes when reeling in a porsche coming out of technical sections-I get excited... oh well

Remember, on the street and on the track, there's no prizes or money won for lap times - no need to abuse your equipment

RJ - who still had a saturn gearbox implode on him, even though the original clutch was at 100K and looked just fine Stupid design flaws
