all ex civics are vtec correct????
my friend just bought a 2000 civic ex and i thought it was supose to have vtec but it does not say vtec on the valve cover
the engine is a d16y8
if it is vtec when does the vtec engauge???

Yes, the D16Y8 does have VTEC. Don't worry about the valve cover, they don't all say VTEC on them. If you really wanna be sure, look for the VTEC solenoid on the left side of the valve cover near the spark plug distributor cap. It should be a small silver to brownish little cylindrical looking part.
Oh, and as far as when VTEC engages, it should happen around 5400-5600 RPMs. (Dont be shocked if you don't hear it)

If he wants a valve cover bad enough that says VTEC, he can put on one from a D16Z6, IIR. Get it from a scrapyard or something. But the Y8 does have VTEC.
From 96-98 honda didn't make an si so the ex had the vtec as well as the hx(it was called vtec-e), all the valve covers were the same and said honda. The only ones that said vtec, besides the dohc, were the d16z6, which was a 5th gen.
