HUGE amounts of white smoke....... then nothing.
hello all i have been boost for about 2.5 years now, but just recently within the past couple of weeks turbo charged....i was driving todday not even boosting really except for like 2-3psi, and all of a sudden my car starts smoking white LIKE CRAZY out of the exhaust.... i figure this was coolant and i had blown a head gasket, but i havnt really been boosting all day...so as its smoking like crazy i go home and by the time i get within 2 miles of my home there is no smoking at all...so i dont understand? did i blow something or or not? i looked at my dipstick and there is no coolant or anythign mixed with the oil. there is a lot of goopy whit **** on my exhaust tip (coolant i assume), and liquid comming out of the connections between my turbo and dp.
so what do u guys think is up? if something was blown wouldnt be constantly smoking, right? my car still seem drivable also.

my car is not water cooled... and i havnt really done anything before this. it doesnt smoke when i let off the gass or anything. it was just smoking crazy for a little while then nothing...it started smoking when i wasnt even in boost, i didnt hear any noises or anything, so sounds of detonation or nothing. hmmm...

when it was smoking.. it was smoking at idle, and while crusing on the highway... and then it started to stop while i was crusing, i let it at idle for a little while to see if it would smoke up again.. and still everything seemed ok...
early in the day (like 2-3 hours before this started to happen i took it up to 8 psi for like a couple pulls that lasted like 5 seconds per pull.

now that u mention it i noticed a hint of blue before it started smoking white.. but then after a few minutes it was all white as thick as fog.
also. i started it back up for a few minutes, and it seems to be idling like normal, no huge clouds or anything...

over the last seven years I have seen two other cars do that. I have only seen this problem with factory pistons. Are your piston factory?
yeah i was planning on doing one tomorrow or soemthing, but if the head gasket is bad would the compression test even be accurate?
A compression test well tell you if you have blown a ring or hg. If two adjacent cylinders are low then its a h/g. If its just one cylinder than you need to redo some work. Good luck buddy.

ok here is a little update...i checked the spark plugs and all 4 were completely clean, a little on the white side, and no oil seemed to have touched them... also there is no goupy milky stuff under the valve cover (stuck my fingers underthrough the oil cap opening), nothing but oil underthere... still gonna try to do a compression test later and see what happens.
the only time ive ever seen that happen, and it happened exactly as described, was when my friend put 5 quarts of oil in his b18b instead of 4. the thing smoked like ive never even seen.. when we revved TONS came out. He drained a quart and the problem ceased.
ok guys here is an update... i drove it around today not boosting, and not going over 3000rpm... the white smoke was minimal and only seemed to appear when the car was at operating temperature... i pretty much drove it to schucks to buy a a cheep compression tester and back (about 30 min of driving).... there was a little bit of white residue on my exhaust tip which i wiped at schucks, and no more apeared when i got home...
i did the compression check soon after i got home and i got 195-185-190-185 (cyl 1-2-3-4 respectivly)....when i did cylinder one i heard a pop sound, which i think came from me turning the motor over to many times.
so does that pop have anythign to do with the head gasket, or nothing at all? so i think i might be in the clear of having any major engine problems...and i think it just might be a head gasket if anything.. what do u guys think?

#'s look and sound good to me. Go beat the **** out of it for a while and see if it goes away. Whenever somthing mysterious happens to my car that I can't explain, and I want it to stop, I just beat it into submission. A nice 4th gear pull to redline should do the trick
Good luck!
Good luck!
