Default Type S shifting??????????

I have noticed when I am shifting through my gears it is a little stiff putting it into the next gear. Is this normal on the RSX or is my sync messed up. I just got the car and I really hope nothings wrong.

I'm actually getting my synchros replaced by Acura. I have a Type S with 15 000 Kms and they are changing the synchros for 1st, 2nd and 3rd gear.

It's a chronic problem on RSX's.... See http://www.clubrsx.com, they have over 100 topics about the grinding of gears.

it is starting to grind a little into second. I am pushing the clutch to the floor. i think it is progessively getting worse.

I know there's apparent problems with the 1-2 shift in the RSX, even though I've rarely encountered this. One definate solution may be to change the tranny fluid. That may help with shifting stiffness. How many miles are on the car now?

It won't hurt to change it now, most often it is changed at the 30K service. A quart of MTF should run $7-8 and I doubt that you would need any more than 3 to change it. If you have any questions, just ask.

And I might also suggest picking up the magnetic drain plugs from Spoon, it'll help clear up any shavings/metal debris that may be floating in there and possibly interfering with your shifting. I'm actually going to pick some up soon. Check out http://www.aj-racing.com if you think they'll help.

I believe the 1-2 shift throw is slightly longer than it seems at times. I'm going to be more careful in shifting(especially after my recent mistake ) and take a little longer between shifts to make sure it's all the way in. You could just be throwing it in and letting off the clutch just slight too quick. That's just my guess though since I haven't seen you drive.

Sorry sivaji, to actually answer your question, I haven't heard of this problem from ep3's, but I wouldn't be completely surprised if the same happened with them.

it grinds on the way into 2nd, while my foot is still down on the clutch all the way.
i fully clutch, throw my gear into second, and it grinds.

Well, then most likely it's the same problem, matt only said that the shifting was stiff.

1-2 grind in the ep3 used to happen to me before. It rarely happens nowadays (when its really cold or something). The only thing I could say about it is that I now make sure that I pull straight down...not down and left (holding the shifter from the side caused me to do this). Now I just hold it from the top, and shift up and down with mere wrist movements, and it feels perfect.

What I do know is let the transmission fluid get to operating temperature, Thats what Honda says it has to be at before an accurate estimate can be made.
(like engine warmed up and such)

Sometimes mine is stiff going into second, but after it gets warmed up its good.

I changed my tranny fluid to MTL at 8K and it made a big difference

Others have used GM syncro friction modifier and claims grinding is completely eliminated. I might try that on my next trans fluid change but so far I'm happy with MTL

I am going to give the GM syncro friction modifer. Can I get that at any auto parts store? The sifting seems to improve when it gets warm.

Personally I cannot endorse the GM Synchromesh. I was running Royal Purple Synchromax in my 6 speed, and I had a slight "notchy" feeling when shifting to second. With the GM Synchromesh (friction modified) the grind was actually worse when cold, and it made the downshift from 3rd to 2nd very stiff. The GM Synchromesh is very thin, and this may be why.

What about Redline transmission fluid. here is a discrption from summit:

"Red Line gear oils and transmission lubricants are designed to provide excellent low temperature shift ability and improved gear protection at higher temperatures. They will reduce differential and transmission temperatures 10-70 degrees F, while efficiency improvements between 1 and 5 percent are typical. The synthetic base stocks used have tremendous thermal stability and provide the best film strength available. Their unique combination of base stocks and additives allow them to carry higher loads compared to petroleum lubricants, and their stability allows them to be used for extended periods."

What do you guys think, will this work? Oh, what weight of oil would I use? they have different weights.

Jim, most of the R guys were using the friction modified fluid and claimed it had gotten rid grinds. How long did you have it in before it got worse? or was like it that to begin with?
