Default Need body work help.....

ok i bought an ef hatch the other day that it has rusted rear quarter panels, i also have this hatch in my garage......i want to fix the hatch i bought because it will be my daily driver (20 days until i get my license back)......i plan on cutting out the quarter panels on this and putting them on my daily driver, the rust on my new one is somewhat near the blue in the picture, and would the red lines be a good place to cut??? then weld it to the other car and do a bit-o-bondo.....or any other ideas.....thanks!

for that much damage it wouldnt be worth cuttin where u have marked. theres plenty of different restoration techniques that can be done.

that looks like not a lot of rust but a lot of work! i think a good body shop can cut out the rust and rework the metal, before cutting that much of the car is cut out, if you use that car to fix the new one, what are you going to do with the one you have a pic of up top?

You're in luck because i just finished doing a rust repair on my teg in the same place as your upper rust spot. However If you plan on doing this yourself make sure you have all the right supplies especially body hammers, an oxy/acelene tourch, and obiously a mig welder.

I would NOT cut out what you said, I would isolate each rust area and add a few inches to account for unseen rust, or just wirebrust the rust/paint back to see how far it streches. NOTE: On mine it was much worse on the inside (rusted inside out) so be careful to remove it all!! If you cut where you said, first of all that fender line will be a Bi*ch to work with body filler. Second, honda probably has the thinnest sheetmetal EVER so you WILL warp it (hence the torch to shrink it and the body hammers to shape it) no matter how hard you try. Cutting a section out as large as you want to will leave your entire rear quarter filled with 5lb's of body filler.

You want to have a happy compromise between removing just enough metal to get all the rust, and removing too much where you'll ruin the panel.

You do realize you can't "Weld" the panel back in but you must "spot weld" it in? This took me a very long time, about a full 2 days for both the outer panel AND the inner fender well. If you just plan on welding one bead, you might as well quit now because your panel will look like a tortilla.

You could always remove the factor seam sealer, drill the spot welds, and remove the entire quarter panel . Good luck with whatever you do but I can GUARANTEE you its 10x more work than you think and will take you 10x longer than you think IF you plan on doing any hint of a good job. Do some reading before you start this project or you won't be happy with the outcome.

BTW: Square patch panels warp easier than round ones.

Looks like a lot a work and some long cuts. Might want to do it like the blue hatch it will be more work but less visible of the smaller cuts. Most of the cuts are at spot welds. Most of the work is in the jams.
