Possible to make a 2 stroke street legal?
I think its possible only if the engine is a 50cc or smaller, and it is registered as a scooter or something like that. I am pretty sure people have their Aprillia RS 50's registered for the street.
the main problem is when you try to register it, the VIN # shows up as unregisterable. so unless you know someone at the DMV, or have the bike titled without a VIN, it will be difficult or impossible to register.

I think "who do you know?" and "how much money do you have?" matters more than emissions and legalities. You can get pretty much anything registered.
There are street bikes that are street legal. like the yamaha rz350 those were around in the 80's and the engines are real similar to the banshee engine infact you can put rz350 powervalve cylinders on a banshee.
Im sure you could register any two stroke just it could cost alot of money and if you live in california or anywhere where the smog restrictoins are very high it will be harder to register it and if you do you will probably only be able to ride it certain months out of the year. You should go to your local dmv and ask them.

And even when you do find a crooked or unknowledgable guy to register a non-street legal bike, there are no guarantees. You could be fine, or the next day you could get pulled over by a savvy cop and have it taken away.
If you're desperate, one thing you can try is to get a cheap rolling chassis from a road legal bike, then slap in the 2stroke engine of your choice, you'll probably be ok then.

Agreed. But arent they getting rid of 2 stokes all together b/c of emmisions? Isnt that why honda, yamaha, etc....are producing new lines of 4 stokes?

Yes, in a few years there will probably be no more new models produced with two stroke engines. Even the 50cc scooters are switching over to 4stroke power now.
The older models will be still around for a long time to come...they aint going anywhere, so no worries.

I have seen an RS and TZ on the road but there are several drawbacks, even IF you manage to get it registered. Firstly the tank range sucks, they would probably do 100 miles or so between fill ups. Then when you fill them up you would need Pre-mix. You wouldn't be able to run standard oil as it would gum it up. There is no idler screw, so they er...dont idle.
The wheels are magnesium and illegal on the road and the suspension as it is would suck harder than a $1000 call girl as it is very stiff. Even the frame may not like the road use. There is no ignition, therefore no keys, no alarm. The generator is a total loss unit, so no lights of any kind and the batteries are tiny gel items that only run the powervalves. You would need to recharge this every other day or so othrewise the battery would go flat.
Hmmm, so its not looking good is it?, It gets worse, read on.....
The gas that you need is at the least (depending on the year and state of tune) Avgas and if its an 2002 on Elf fuel. With Elf fuel you have to use even more expensive oil otherwise it goes bang. Plugs are $35 a piece and you cannot clean or gap them.
There are no filters ANYWHERE on the intakes. They use (depending on the year and state of tune) pressurised airboxes which suck in stones, small birds and children. The pistons are going to last you 250 miles or so and the crank about 1000 miles TZ and 1500 miles RS, if you don't keep the pistons fresh they seize. If you dont warm them up properly they cold seize. Oh and if you dont get the jetting right to suit that days weather......they seize.
So where are we...no lights, expensive to fuel, non compliant suspension, high maintenace engine. Then maybe a couple of minor details.
They cannot be ridden slowly, er have no seat padding and are extremely noisy.
Cliff notes: You would have to be committed and rich to run a TZ250 or RS250 on the road. Stick with the NSR and TZR, perhaps the Aprilia RS for 2 stroke thrills.

MX Riders are not ready to give up the two-stroke. I guarantee they will be around for years to come. As long as people believe they are superior to 4-strokes they will still be here. There are plenty of people who feel this way.

Yeah, I thought we were talking about emmissions controlled vehicles here.
Racing\competition and off-road vehicles are different story. Although the goverment is already taking steps to make it harder on off road 2strokers also...
