the zc is obviously better, but i dont think the hassle of buying a whole zc tranny which isnt cheap and the whole change over is really worth it at all.

I went through the same thing and decided to just use the stock si tranny I had and with the money I had left I got a new clutch and a resurfaced to 13lb oem flywheel

A ZC tranny is going to have far fewer miles than any junkyard Si trany will have and its no more expensive.

A plus of the ZC tranny (with a ZC engine) NO more torque steer................

Si tranny has a shorter final drive, and therefore has shorter overall gearing.

ZC tranny uses equal-length axles, and therefore it won't cause torque steer.

The "best" tranny would be a hybrid of both, but it all depends on what you have to spend and what you're looking to do with it.

ZC trannies aren't that expensive. H Motors Online sells them for $150 + shipping, but I'm not sure if the intermediate shaft is included. You'd have to call and ask. Also there is no guarantee that you'll get one with good synchronizers, but this isn't as much of an issue of you're going to tear it down and build a hybrid tranny.

More info on axles for the ZC tranny.

More info on ZC vs. Si gearing.

You may also want to PM user B18C5-EH2 about his hybrid ZC/Si tranny. I remember he did a write up with pics in here not long ago . . .

If you're willing to dish out $600 for a ZC/Si hybrid tranny, give these guys a call. Or $500 with a core.

The Effin Motorworks hybrid tranny is actually a rather good deal IMHO. I had forgotten their name/site, thanks for bringing it up!

One note, I believe they do not use genuine Honda synchronizers, but rather a less expensive aftermarket brand. They claim that the aftermarket synchros are just as good, and it helps to lower the cost significantly.

Si has lower final but taller gearset, ZC has taller final but shorter gearset. Thats why a hybrid works better than either alone. I have run both, the ZC feels exactly the same as Si box only without the torque steer. Overall gearing is a combo if final drive and the gear set together, overall drive ratio is about the same between the two because of that. Not ecactly the same but they are close enough a but dyno and street driving you will not notice a difference, Except for torque steer.

Try finding a Si trans with less than 200,000 miles on it, good luck. Gears do wear out and when they are you can't rebuild it, and about that milage the gear faces are worn. ZC trany has far fewer miles becaus trthe Japanese do not typicly drive any where near as much as we do.

I got my si tranny from handcommand and it only had 93,000 on it. if the zc tranny from hmo comes with a intermediate shaft that's a good deal as well.

Torque sterr is what happens on front wheel drives, it is far worse when you have axels of unequal length. One long and one short axel. THe long one is more springy so power tends to plant more on rights wheel which on an Si with the anemic American engine is not bad, however steop up to a DOHC ZC or anything pushing more power and the wheel whill whip hard to the right. Mine did with Si box, the ZC box has intermediate shaft and therefor two axels of same length, Tourgue steer is dramaticly less. And you can drive more agressively without having two hands firmly on the steering wheel to keep it in control.
