what gear do you use when dyno-tuning?
just wondering what gear you fellow luders are using...
i was always told use 4th gear cause it is closest to 1:1 or some **** like that
but i hear some people use third gear...
does third produce a higher whp reading the 4th?

4th is your basic, most common, gear to use.
However people do tune in 3rd gear. i forgot the member's name but he tuned in 3rd because that was the gear he would be spending most of his time.
he's probably in my sig

NOTE:
This was a MUSTANG dyno NOT a dynojet, the dynojets reads way to high (error) and the mustang it true power at the wheels. I also did all runs in 3rd gear so the power would be a little higher in 4th (slower excellerataion less power lost to excellerating parts). So I don't want to hear "I though stock ludes were better than 141hp at the wheels", Yes they are on a dynojet but NOT a mustang dyno, and not in 3rd gear. I wanted to tune the car in 3rd because that is were I spend most of the time on the track.

I haven't dynoed my car and neither am I close to doing so for a few months when I got my other parts installed and done. But I think it would make sense to do it in 3rd, because just like the guy said it's where you spend most of the time specially if you are racing....

so i had it wrong...if i am reading this correctly he says the 4th gear reads more power than 3rd ....HUH!

dynoed mine in third. Why do it in fourth when you barely even hit fourth at the drag strip. No need to race through fourth anyway. If you havent beaten the guy through third then your not going to win. Fourth will only get you in trouble with the law. Sorry if i went off onto another subject. But it all came together in the end

***side note***
if you read more power to the wheels in 4th gear than third...or vise versa...
does this mean you will be making less power...
for instance...person A says he's got 300whp...and that was tuned in 4th gear...
does this mean on the street he makes less Whp in other gears besides 4th???

Good ?...
Talking about that...some guy was talking about a car that had 200 hp and 200 ftlb of torque.....is that possible at one gear.... I think it's bull because the way things work, but then on the other hand another guy said it was possible at one gear... but I dunno...
Anyone?

i recently compared this on a dynojet in my fourth gen lude. the difference between the fourth gear run and the third gear run was about .8whp
not even 1 whp difference, i now request the runs be done in third.
personally the fourth gear runs concern because it takes so long to get too redline, while third gear runs reach redline much faster. it seems (and sounds) alot safer for the engine as its not struggling to reach redline.

I usually do it in 3rd because 4th gear is hard on your motor. You're sitting there stationary with some wimpy *** fans and you're just legging it out really long over 7-10 runs it can't be good for the motor. Depends on how may runs I'm doing and how much fine tuning I need to do.
sorry for bringing this back...but at least i searched...on an h22 engine with an f22 tranny, i made 11 more hp in 3rd gear than in 4th gear. now i have the h22 tranny. what gear should i dyno it in...3rd, to put less strain on the motor?
edit: 11 more whp and 3 more torque
