Do not remove your cat. That will cause terrible things to your header both stock or aftermarket. Your car will fail emissions big-time as well. If you don't want your car to be too loud, but want to work with the exhaust, I have two suggestions. I have the Thermal R&D reaer section exhaust on my '96 LS and it is so awesome. Very quiet and gives a great deep tone, better than any exhaust I've ever heard. I was worried about my car being loud just like you, but I have to tell you that this exhaust is the one to go with if you want quiet. After you do that, get a DC Sports or Catco high-flow cat. Emissions should pass and you get added performance. Good luck and trust me on that Thermal, you'd love it. (If you get a cat-back, get the "Stealth")

you will throw a "check engine" light if you remove your cat, and won't gain much horsepower, once the CEL is on you will loose power cause you ECU goes into safety mod, if anything get a high flow cat, it will only increase HP if you have a free flowing header & exhaust, i believe somebody in this forum or ITR threw a code 62 or something, fried their o2 sensor cause they gutted the Cat out in my opinion

1999 GSR turbo w/ no cat and NO CEL w/ greddy EVO, havn't had one since I got the turbo... secondary O2 sensor is zip tied to the shift linkage under the car.. have not gotten a code yet. Going on almost a year

your car shouldnt throw emission lights, if you keep the o2 sensor in, and how in the hell can you say no cat will make no horsepower??!! you gotta be kidding me...if you dont want it louder after taking the cat out, and you have aftermarket piping, think about having a muffler shop installing a resonater...it is definately gonna sound different, depending on the kind of muff ya got...if you have some pos muff like a thermal, its gonna sound raspy and metallic...

Keep your cat on... or at the very least, get a high-flow cat. The amount of pollution a single car puts out w/o a cat is ridiculous... it's not worth destroying the environment for a few hp (especially since you're n/a). I don't know how old or mature you are, but try to think of future generations. I think about kids I might have in the future and kids my friends might have - LoL - I know, sounds like I'm an environmentalist (I'm not... maybe I'm a futurist? )
