I might be wrong on this but i just wanted to make sure, i went through the wiring diagrams and i believe this goes to the tach...am i right? or way off....

 

if you follow those wires, they go under the distributor to a 2 pin connector on other side of the distributor, and you are correct - for the tach.

That 2pin connector that those wires lead to is for the ignition coil. One wire is positive, and the other is a ground. That has nothing to do with the tach. On the 7pin connector for the distributor, there should be 2 white wires (if it's an Si or HF), one fatter than the other. This fatter white wire sends the RPM signal to the ECU. I'm not sure exactly where/how the tach pics it up at...

 

if your installing a tach, take off the dizzy cap and unscrew the positive post to the coil, put your wire in thier and screw it back down. works like a charm.

 

its a std, and its a blue wire....

sorry, i stand corrected, but i do know you hook up aftermarket tachs to that blue wire (2pin connector)

Ooops, than I am wrong.

 

it would probably alot cleaner to just splice into the blue wire leading to the stock tach, and alot less wiring to do.

its the #1 pin on the 8p connector on the back of your cluster. just look for the solid blue wire.

that is to say if your installing an aftermarket tach.

Its an std, so it doesnt have a tach, im getting a cluster from the si which has the tach, can someone explain how to hook it up? And also, while taking my stock cluster, i found a amber piece of plastic screwed in on top of the cluster, if i want to change the color of my gauge lights is this what i would change?

sorry but u are wrong.. the blue wire is the "tach" wire.. yes they goto the coil as well, but it also goes to the tach as well.. again.. the blue wire from that 2 pin connector is the tach wire..
if u have a std, or DX model without a tach.. the wires are already there.. just plug in the gauage and the tach will start working

 

He asked if this was the tach wire which is the ...."BLUE" wire

so just plug it into where my gas gauge and water temp plug in is now?

WTF? just take out ur gauge cluster, and put in the one from at Si with a tach.. if u car is 88-89 then make sure ur gauage cluster is from a 88-89 if its 90-91 then u need one from 90-91.. they plug right in.. no need for any other wiring as long as u keep the years i just said right.
