I failed my emission test twice for both HC and CO tests. Currently i have a 1st gen b16a vtec, in my 89 honda civic hatchback, no modifications but a cheap intake. New exhaust system, 2" piping + existing cat(mechanic said the cat is still good) + existing resonator + new muffler.

HC
Standard: .80
Reading : 1.40

CO
Standard: 15.0
Reading: 41.3


Anyone got some advice before i bring my car back to the mechanic? I know people had problems getting their cars with japanese b16a's to pass emissions, but for those who pass, please help !

 

i have always retarded the timming a whole lot before i go and it helped me

 

if yo uhad the time money and know how yo could always put in the old engine and than take it out after the test.

 

im broke so swapping back the old motor is not going to happen =]

however im going to try retarding the timing and see how it goes but is there any more advice you fellow b16'rs can give me?

 

i don't know about you guys out side of CA, but here...they check timing, and if its off by too much...it fails...well...for me anyway
