oil leak from valve cover washers
basically i was checking my plugs today when i realized that oil is leaking around several of the washers on the valve cover. my question is, is when i replace them tomorrow (hopefully) what do i do in terms of torquing them down? and should i apply honda bond or something to help it seal? also are these washers model specific? or can ones from an si or other honda work? oh and i will be changing the oil along with it. thanks guys!
I'd actually be damn suprised if these things leaked as there's very little torque on them (~8lb/ft) and they're sealed by oil. I'd try just using some hondabond on the ones in question before replacing them unless they're cracked. I'd guess they're universal agianst the entire Honda line, but I haven't compared so that's just an assumption.
Dude....easy
Go to Kragen and ask them for a valve cover gasket replacement kit. That comes with all the washers....or simply ask them if you just can get the washers by them selves it shouldn't be that much..I think I paid around $20 when I replaced my Valve cover

I would recommend going to the honda dealership and just buying some more valve cover garments... They cost like 3 bucks each... and if the nuts are stripped, you can also get those too
Real easy to fix... Just take them of one at a time and replace.

Do you have your breather capped???
There should not be enough pressure in there to allow them to leak. Unless you took them off and reused them if they where in bad condition...

I don't know... I've had a bad one and it leaked like crazy.... not really so much at idle, but after you drove around the block... it would be all over the valve cover.

but that sounds exactly like that.. a bad one. If it is made wrong or is not put on correctly (not saying you didn't) it should not leak... I just don't see how there could be enough pressure to push through the seal.
well i had my valves adjusted a while back and that was the last time it was opened. when we took the washers off they were almost fused to the valve cover and we used a screwdriver to get em off...
that's how they should be... You didn't reuse those did you?? the oil makes a good tight seal. If you have just taken them off or replaced them recently they won't be on as well..

they aren't universal. B series washers are smaller and will leak if used, but they serve they're purpose if your in a pinch.

well i tried the honda bond thingand when i went to tighten the bolts down, the front two wont tighten, they are seated with the washer but they just keep turning. i really could use that little mad face we used to have...
The nut is probably striped.. I would just go buy new valve garments and nuts. Hondabond is great stuff, but would recommend getting the correct part.
well ive decided that im going to buy new nuts and garments, but how to get the old ones off? im thinking of just taking a dremel and cutting the nut off. but what about the valve cover bolt? can i just buy some new ones and install those along with new nuts and washers?
His washers are fucked because I'm the one who did the valve adjustment and I've never seen one of those as stuck to the valve cover as his were, EVER! They did NOT want to go ANYWHERE, even when I used a flathead wedged up under and tried prying them off, they STILL didnt want to come off.
So yea, definately replace those but the bolts should be fine unless they're stripped. Its easy to strip those so watch out, they dont need much torque.

ok so heres the story... i cant get off 4 of the bolts, seems to me they are probably stripped. what i think i should do is, is drill a hole down from the top of the nut so that i can remove it and then put on new bolts, nuts, washers, and gasket. but im not doing anything until i get an answer whether this is a good idea or not.
p.s. i have drilled out bolts before, so im not new at this...

I wouldn't drill out anything.... did you snap the bolt off?? Or do you just mean you can't get the nut off??? is it turning???
I am guessing you mean you striped the nut and now can not get it to come off the bolt... right??
If that's the case using a ratchet on the nut take a smaller wrench and put it under the nut. Now push up with the wrench and slowly loosen the nut with the ratchet... the bolt should not strip because it is a much harder metal than the nuts...

what i mean is, is that i bolt is still intact and it turns but wont stop. i cant fit anykind of wrench in there to help pry it off. what im trying to say is the bolt turns only with the use of a wrench, and that when i turn it the bolt doesnt loosen or tighten.
then I would try using a pair of vice grips and try pulling it up... I just think it would be a lot of work to repair. IIRC the bolt part should unscrew from the head. If that doesn't work might try using a bolt cracker... Just giving my opinion.

it does, i've replaced two in the last year.

ok well i have reason to believe they are crossthreaded, because when i turn it the head of the nut turns like its been crossthreaded. i cut the head off one of the nuts the bolt doesnt turn with the nut. i have tried everything. i just need to get these guys off...
