What causes corrosion on battery?
Well I have to keep putting baking soda/water mix in order to neutralize the acid on my battery posts and terminals, anyone have a fix for this. Also my battery is fine its a POS energizer that I have had for like 3-4 years. I am planning on replacing it due to age....my positive terminal has horrible acid buildup and am afraid that its going to eat away at my terminal post...I am having to cut off my positive terminal and get a new one thats how bad the corrosion is. Anyone have any suggestions or tips? Also any suggestions for a decent battery looking to spend around 70-80 bucks, I need around 500-600CCA due to colorado weather, and hopefully a lighter replacement. Tomorrow I am planning on swapping it out along with my ground wires and am wanting to know how to also clean up the engine bay, here is a pic:

the corrosion comes from an old sometimes leaky battery, so yeah i would go ahead and replace the battery and terminals if they are remotely corroded. on my ford tempo daily beater i had to replace the terminals due to this same problem. i put some $45 autozone battery in her for now, but a DieHard in my accord for like $65.....
Well I have to clean the posts and terminals like every 2-3 months....and any suggestions for a 70-80 dollar battery? And as far as the engine bay, I would looking to clean it up (less clutter) any suggestions.
to prevent that corrosion, you might coat the +/- terminals with a good layer of vasoline. Coat the battery harness clamps & exposed wires too.
Works for me & a cheap fix.

I just use wheelbearing grease or chassis grease. It doesn't melt & run like Vaseline. But it collects dirt so you have to clean it sometimes.
I once had a battery where the plastic case cracked around the terminal post. That let some H2 vapor leak out right onto the post, corrosion was horrible. Look real carefully, if yours is cracked, you may as well replace it now.

Well I went to my ol faithful Kragan and purchased new terminal posts for 3 bucks and also scrubbed out my battery tray and battery. I also pulled the battery and poured some baking soda and water over it and it bubbled like a gassy person in a pool....needless to say I will need to monitor it and hopefully those new posts (my OEM ones were shot) will hold up, at least for a while. I also purchased (they look like felt material washers) and put thos on the battery posts. Thanks guys for the help

My batt used to get like that all the time.
Pissed me off.
Sometimes it got so bad I could not start the car.
My solution.
I got a optima red top.
sealed, no leak.
1,000 cold cranking amps.
I suggest you get a red top.

The hydrogen gas released continually from all batteries varies from a small amount during normal driving to larger amounts when the battery is undergoing heavy charging or discharging. The vented hydrogen carries with it some amount of vaporized electrolyte, which condenses in the air and gets deposited on top of the battery. This thin film of sulfuric acid eventually can lead to corrosion of metal parts around the battery. Corrosion around a battery is part of normal battery life, and it can be cleaned away easily before it causes problems. If corrosion is ignored, however, it can damage battery cables and holddown parts and lead to operating problems, such as a no-start condition.
Damn give this man a raise.....well I know how the build up gets there, guess I should have worded it, how to prevent corrosion on battery. But thank you for the throughough explanation.
so anyone know how to prevent it other than get a sealed top battery?

The original "Honda" (AC Delco battery) finally died and I replaced it with a Pep Boys battery it corroded the negative battery cable right off the battery, I replaced both the battery and the cable with "genuine" Honda, no more corrosion. Just my experience. Worth the little bit of extra cash to get a better battery.
