Default thinking about using R for winter

I am very strongly considering taking my R out of storage and using it all year round. My option right now is go buy an 03 SI or take the R out. I would have to go buy winter tires and everything but thats not a big deal. Most of the si would be taken out on loan. i don't know what do to. so confused at the moment

any question on details about car or me, ask away

I have stored my 2001 R for the last 2 winters.......next year screw it.....I'm just going to drive it.....afterall its not a very expensive car.....

I can see myself 3 years down the road having finished school with a decent paying job and then selling it becuase i can afford a nicer car.....that would mean i wasted half my time with it

you can get plenty nice beater for $2-$4k. i.e. i picked up a '93 Integra RS w/ 63k w/ auto tranny for $3800. it would be foolish to buy another car w/ loan. i would buy a beater... wouldn't drive an R in the nasty winter that your NE people are having.

what could I say... beater is a beater. if you're gonna fix up the beater, more power to you. but, it's puppose is to get you from point A to point B. anything more, would be nice, but shouldn't play such a huge roll... especially when you have a nice ITR to play with on the weekends.

take the R out and enjoy it.

you don't even need winter tires, although they'll help when the fairy dust comes.

I'd like to know what tires you have, that you say you don't need winter/ snow tires???

My Kuhmo MXs suck in this snow! I can't even get out of my driveway (slight incline).

yep.. tires like are fine in the cold weather, but.. for any type of snow its better to have at least all season.

Im in CT and drive my r year round. I have a set of michelin artic alpins. The car is very controlable in the snow and ice and can easly go through up to 5-6 inches of snow if you have to. Only downfall is that in deep snow the car gets hung up on the snow do to the low ride hight,

Bbasso - this is Maryland, not NYC I'm suprised you guys haven't put nails through your tires and duct-taped skis on either side of the car. Anywho, I operate on the idea of momentum in the snow...that, and the roads around here are pretty flat as is. I also have the opportunity to utilize my folks Isuzu Trooper should I really need to get somewhere. >>>>> All of this aside, there is only snow on the ground 0-5% of the time during the winter, that is a LOT of time where my Yokohama ES100's are butter.

If you're thinking of getting a beater, why not get a truck? The reasons for putting the R away sound like they are primarily maintenance/rust related...otherwise you wouldn't be pondering an SI as your winter snow raider.

edit: grammar

I use my R all year round. It's really not a big deal. I've actually still got my Carbotech XPs on there still!

I do have a scooter to handle daily duties, though.

Yeah, I'm the type who never leaves home without a swiss army knife, but there comes a point where you have to say "enough."

I might pick up a set of winter tires for next season, or something like that, but there is a lot more time in the winter when it isn't snowing, than when it is.

Since my father doesn't mind me using his car for days/ weeks like this, I just plan on keeping the baby in the warm, dry, salt free garage. On days that are dry but cold I don't mind- Infact I get the tires up to a somewhat normal operating temp in a few mins of driving. But before that I slip and slide with cold tires.

i am pretty sure the R will be coming out. I'm looking into snow tires now and no i will not ask, i know how to use the search button. only sad thing is i'll be racking up miles on my current 8k ITR. its 25 miles to school one way. oh wells, i need a car.

i'm still gonna buy a real beater for 2-3k. if anyone knows of a civic, teg, or del sol with low mileage, help me out. thanks for the input guys!!! as much as i baby my R (some of you gawk at its immaculate condition), its gonna come out.

Take that garage queen out! Just have it waxed up for added protection. I am surprised to see this post now, we've already had 3-4 snow storms!

Guess where the ITR is!

I totally agree with Cosworth. If you have the time/money to make your "beater" faster/handle better, more power to ya.Chance of theft goes up. But like he said, a good beater/daily driver is basically something ultra reliable and good for daily driving, and not a threat of being stolen. You have the ITR for speed/handling/pleasure. Get yourself a decent beater to drive everyday.

I have a 2000 SI that sits in the garage, and I drive an 87 Accord LXi I daily. In fact, I love that damn car. 30+ mpg, very comfortable, super reliable and drives damn good. Also I can park it anywhere and not have to worry about finding it when I come back..

I took me 1.5 hours yesterday to get hme from my GF's house (normal trip 5 minutes) w/ my Azenis. I didn't know it was snowing 'till I left the club saturday night and had waaay too many beers to do anything but leave it @ my GF's house until I sobered up.
