Default Grinding when Transmission Fluid Gets too Hot?

I was at the track last weekend and on my second run I couldn't shift down to second at high speeds without grinding. I was not rev matching or heel toeing, which I suspect this would eliminate the grinding issue. However, since I still need to practice at that, it is not currently an option.

So here's my question, were the gears grinding because the transmission fluid got so hot that it wasn't letting the synchros spin at the right speed to allow a smooth down shift? If this is true, then would changing to a heavier transmission fluid or somehow cooling the transmission better help with the grinding?

And if the above is true; is there a transmission cooler available for the R? Or could I make something?

Thanks in advance!

hmm, so this only happens on your later runs? Cause the syncro shouldnt let you into 2nd if you are going too fast - that's what a syncro is supposed to do.

Maybe someone else can help, but all I can say is don't force it - if it doesnt go in easily, it doesnt go in.

also try changing your clutch fluid. RS was having some grinding problems and some other shifting problems and that solved it for him.. well except now his 3rd gear sync is screwed up..

Honestly, I think learning to rev match is the ONLY option... You should not be forcing the car into gear at high speeds!! There is a person locally that went to the EXPO and came back with every one of his synchros fried because he did not drive the car properly. That was his second set of synchros in only 6,000 miles!!!!! Please find someplace to practice rev matching (and once you get the hang of that, heel-toeing) at relatively low speeds, and when you have that down, take it to the track. Not only will your car thank you, but you will be much smoother (and probably faster)!!

How do you flush the clutch fluid? Is there a bleeder somewhere?
