Default What is a "good" radar detector.

I cant seem to find out what is the best bang for my buck, i was gonna buy a whistler 1490 from a guy for 25$ and its 160 new. And there was also a cobra 1900 i believe for 40$. Then i started checking out ebay and therers tons of stuff for good prices, but I dont know what to look for, some of these are only 30 bucks and they have vg-2 cloaking 360 degree scanning technology, i just want something that works and i dont have to pay 200 dollars for it. Can anyone help me out?

dont waste your time with that cheap crap... go for a beltronics.. i honestly think they are some the best detectors on the market without going all out for a v1 or 8500... ive got a 910 and it a damn good detector

Best bang for the buck is hard to say. How many bucks do you have? I have owned 4 cheap detectors ranging in price from 100-200 over the years. They all sucked. False positives etc. I bought a v1 last year. I will never go back.

If this is your first detector spend at least 100 on a current model bel or whistler.

I wouldn't say these would be the best bang for the buck, but they are the ONLY two I would choose. just my .02

The Escort 8500 is a bad *** piece. K-40 makes bad *** stuff too(same people that make most radar guns) I wouldn't waste a dollar on Cobra or Whislter. Its the same as anything else, you get what you pay for. Most cheap units false alot or warn you too late or are detectable. Valentine is nice but pricey. Escort is still a little expensive but worth it. BTW, I have tried and tested most of the forementioned units with a actual K-40 radar/laser gun, and most under $100 failed miserably.

If you want the mackdaddy, undetectable, laser shifting, rader sensing , front/rear sensor, 360, no falsing unit, go with the Escort SR-7 with Laser shifter. Its heavy on the pockets, but ive never had a complaint and could not get it to false and started reading at over a mile away.

$235 plus shipping for a Passport 8500. Best price I've found.

thats a pretty bold statment v1 is nice but there are tests that say the 8500 has better ka range but the v1 site has tests that say the v1 is the best at everything it really comes down to what features your looking for the v1 has very few but is really hardcore the 8500 is loaded and there great I tuned off my x-band so no more walgreens detector and it has a voltage display which is awsome

you cant buy a radar detector for $25-$40 and expect it to work the way you want it. you have to decide if all you want is a detector or a detector and jammer in one. i have just a detector by Rocky Mountain Radar and it has saved me everytime there is a highway patrol lurking around the highways. i slow down and they drive past me. im upgrading to the detector jammer and will be selling my detector for $140 if youre interested. retail on it is $199.

K40.. Been using it now for 4 years. I just got the new one that just came out and I reccomend then highly and have been a happy customer. (and salesman of them) But I hooked up a Z06 with the Big system they sell. Front and Rear Defuser. Complete Hidden system.. Bad *** system but Very exspensive. I want to say he ended spending round 2K for the whole system installed.
