Default Must have mods for track racing... please comment

There are hundreds on topics on mods for what seems to be street racing (i.e. i/h/e)... but when I do search do I rarely come up with the must have mods for track racing. So, I figure I would gather some info... I have listed some that I think are critical in track racing. Please feel free to add...

1. The obvious mods: roll-cage/seats/harness/helmet/suit/r-tires
2. External Oil cooler/thicker oil (?)
3. Racing oil pan
4. Better brakes/brake duct
5. High efficiency radiator
6. various gauges (oil, water, volt, etc)
7. ???

Anything that I missed on the _must_ list? I am asking this question after Jeff (Pyromaster) and I discussed about how track-prepared ITRs really are. Also, some of these mods should transfer to our street cars.

what's up Sean?

just to clarify, are we talking a daily driver that we're occasionally putting on the track or a car to use for track only?

I would definitely add some sticky "R-Compound" tires to the list. (Oops) you already had those at the end of point 1 on your list. How about a Mugen, KaZZ, or Quaife LSD and some adjustable coilover suspension. You can be faster on the one or two straits on the track, but you'll have a hell of a time trying to keep a car that's faster in the corners behind you all day.

It would be for daily driver/weekend-track car. However, I think that except for the roll-cage, other mods can see double duty.

they are listed, last item in line #1

not only the radiator, but also a spoon or mugen rad cap/thermostat would also be beneficial too...

well ive tracked my ITR twice now. Only thing I had besides my I/H/E and final drive is my helmet.
I have no roll cage althought one is recommended....I used my stock rotors, brakes, radiator..everything. No problems.

I do recommend some better brake pads for sure...good race tires are highly recommended to. I ran on RE730s and
they got ate up! But for a daily driver / track car...your ITR is pretty set up for it already...everything you do after
the fact is strickly for safety measures or just to have a better performing R in the track.

PS: I ran my car with the exact same oil as I always run and expericed no blow by what so ever...everything was fine when
my events were over....except bad tire wear and my brakes/ rotors were a bit warped afterwards.

cage, harness(es), hawk blue pads up front, maybe in back depending on your driving style, alignment setup for your weight, good brake fluid. that's all you "need". A better oil cooler wont really hurt, I'd skip the oil pan personally, brake ducts rock, a nice fluiddyne would be nice with a lower temp thermo, some water wetter in the rad as well, maybe wire the fan to a switch so you can leave it on all the time. On the track I like to remove my PS belt but that depends on your what you like as well. Oil Press, Oil Temp and Water Temp gauges are nice to have, fuel press. would be nice too.

That's just my opinion.

Oh, don't forget the in car cam!!! very important piece

You don't need that much for a stock car - mainly better fluids (brake, coolant, oil), better brake pads and better tires. The RE010s sidewalls are a bit soft and they will overheat and chunk. Run you car with the heater on and always always do cool-down laps.

If you increase the power output of the motor - then you're looking at more upgrades.

I thought our R's were track ready off the showroom floor?
Thats all you normally hear about around here, about our "factory prepped race cars"
I think a Helmet is about it as far as pulling up to a track and running, unless the track specifies more.

Your brakes will fade big time at the track (not autocross) if you try and go with stock pads and fluid.

Safety equipment (helmet, balaclava, suit, shoes, gloves) does not qualify as a "mod" in my book. All tracks that I know of require helmets, gloves and proper clothing (I wear 3 layer Nomex).

Yeah, after market fluid and pads are a must!!! I went to a track event this weekend and even with ATE TYPE 200 brake fluid, my stock pads started to fade really badly. This weekend I am hopefully going to go bleed the brakes system again and put some nicer pads on.

After a roll bar/cage your next modification is definitely a driving school or some other driver training. The above suggestions are great.

Must have?

Better brake fluid, and pads.
Roll bar or roll cage.
Screw your head on straight.
Decent helmet, and preferably a horse collar.

You don't need anything else, other than a helmet if you're just getting started. Take it slow. It takes years to build up lots of skill.

Don't forget a full stereo system with dual 15s in the trunk, clear corners, and lots and lots of NOS.

I'm planning on doing several track days next year, my mods at that point with the track in mind will be:

Porterfield R4S pads in front
Motorcraft HP brake fluid (might be Super Blue at that time)
Autopower 4-pt. rollbar
Racing seat, harness
Front bra with lenses taped over (prevents chips, looks kinda wicked with black tape on the bra )
Falken Azenis on stock 15s (gonna put my kumho V700s on Rota Slipstreams i think, my TE-37 16s will remain street, which is kinda backwards, but it's alot cheaper putting high-wear tires on 15s than 16s long term)
