Are the odometers on the DC5 stored within the cluster itself or somewhere else? Like if one DC5 had 20000 miles and the other with 25000 miles, and I put the 25k cluster on the 20k car, will the 25k cluster read 20k? I wanted to put a DC5-R cluster in a DC5-S without any odometer discrepancies.
I believe it to be stored in the cluster, Reason I say this is Honda started something with the 03 Accords that if for any reason the guage cluster fails while under warranty the technician at the repairing dealer can use the HDS to put the exact same mileage on the new odometer unit...In other words if you swapped in a DC5R cluster it should read the kilometers it had on it before it was removed.
I hope somebody can second me on this...

If what you said is true, then couldn't someone rip a dealer off by swapping clusters... maybe I am mis-understanding your first line but that is what I take of it?

this is very much true. the miles are stored on the CLUSTER and not the ECU or anywhere else. This is something i knew for a long time. There was a discussion about this on CLUBRSX before also and at that time i called up the dealer and asked them that question and my answer was CONFIRMED. You are also right someone could swap out the cluster and take it back to the dealer for warranty reasons buts it all comes down to controlling your miles. you have to make sure you dont get caught up. i dont think people do this unless they have access to two clusters at all times or if they figured out a way to stop the CLUSTER from changing miles. ITS ALL ELECTRONICS you'll be surprised how easy it is to stop things from doing what it was suppose to. HINT HINT (rsx gauge cluster)

No, The HDS can only change the mileage on the new unit if the unit reads zero miles. That way American Honda knows wich dealer ordered wich cluster for wich car. There is no way to use the HDS to change the mileage on a cluster.

Technically I think the mileage you put on your car would not be read by the old cluster...Whatever the mileage was when you removed it should be the mileage you read when you put it back in,
Can anyone second this for me?
