Default what motor is stock in 96-99 hatchback?

i'm a newbie to the honda world and about to buy a hatchback.

do most people use this engine, or do most swap it for something bigger? the only performance mods i'm most likely to do are CAI, exhaust, and maybe headers if it doesn't get too loud. irvine cops love to pull the hondas over.

Almost everyone swaps out the y7 for something bigger. But if you're worried about cops, try swapping in a D16y8 head and IM, with an EX tranny. That oughta pick you up a bit.

With the mods you listed, you won't get much out of the d16. If you want some nice gains out of it, you should look into turbo'ing it. Otherwise, look into a swap. How much power are you wanting to make?

Some people like the SOHC and smoe want to swap to B series or H series. If you are interested in keeping the D series, you should search under "SOHC" and you will find hundreds of posts.
