werid KNOCKING noise
I also posted this in tech forum, but thought maybe specificly civic owners would have some insight. thanks
Well to start with, I have a 95 civic ex coupe and just recently (4 days ago) my car has been making a werid sound(coming from the driver's side of the engine) . The sound can be best described as this: sounds like a fast woodpecker or a firing machine gun. So in other words, like a fast constant knocking. It doesnt really get louder or softer. It only happens when I am in motion and the car is shifted to neutral or in gear but not accelerating. When I am braking, completely stopped, or in gear and pressing the gas, it does not happen. I am 97% sure the sound is coming from the engine and not like the suspension or wheel because of the conditions the sound comes. Any ideas as to what this might be? Thanks alot!

nooo i dont think so, if he actually bent or broke a rod it wouldnt change with the amount of load on the engine. it would be ******* loud and broken all the time.
im gonna say bearing (possibly main or rod), oil or water pump.
only way to know is to tear the ****** down
good luck

I doubt he threw a rod.
If the sound goes away when you accelerate, it probably needs a valve adjustment. If not, it's probably piston slappage.

Take off the valve cover, take a look and eliminate that possibility.
If its not something there then you know a bearing is going out.
Make sure to check all your pulleys and belts. I had a loose pulley once that was making all kinds of noises.
A mechanics stethoscope is an awesome tool for $10. check it out!

sounds like my engine exaactly, my problem was i threw a rod. could possibly be yours too. Put a stethoscope down by the noise it could help you identify your problem more easily.

this is bad news. Well since I neither have the knowledge or time to tear apart my engine, I guess I will just be forced to have Honda look at it. I believe that this sound came once last yaer, but just went away after a few days. I had the timing belt and water pump replaced last year, so I do not think it is the water pump. Also, what exactly is the CV joint? because I have records from the previous owner of CV joints being worked on. Thanks
