Default 2000 civic stereo wiring problems

needless to say, the stock harness was cut and wired into,
and now the dash lights dont work, the speedometer doesnt work,
and the car wont even run without dying. i checked all the fuses
and everything is ok, but maybe there are a few i missed?
i looked at the harness and there were wires unused and such.
what gives?would this have been avoided if a harness kit was used?
any help is appreciated. im going back to look at it tomorrow.

sounds like more than the wires behind the radio being a problem, but double check your fuses both inside and under the hood
yes a lot of problems can be avoided by using the proper harnasses
also make sure that none of the factory wires are coming into contact with each other...and verify that everything is wired correctly
good luck
