i just changed out my axles and the ABS suddenly comes on after i took the car for a test spin. any ideas why it went on? i did check the level and it is full. also, if the light comes on does, that mean that ABS is not working? thanks
Mine did the same thing when i did my swap(had to pull the axles) and it also did it when i replaced the CV boots. But both times it went away by itself after 50 miles or so. I have no idea why it does that but thats what it did.
what exact axles did u use? i did that once from a car that didnt have abs and the ABS light came on. i used the axle as a temporary fix to get around. i replaced it wit a gsr axle (with abs) and the light was instantly gone. just be carefull with the abs light on b\c that meansu have no abs and dont expect it to b there.
i hope that this helps you out a little

thanks for the reply. the ABS light came on only when i start to drive..i used axles from a LS and i have a 96..i wonder does that make a diff?
it could very well make a difference depending on if the 96 ls u got the axles from had abso not (i think they do though) see if one of your friends or someone has a set of gsr axles that u can throw in there to test it out. if so the light might just dissapear,

Why dont you check the code and look it up in the Helms book. It will tell exactly which sensor went bad. On my teg, when removing the axles, they were seized in the hub so i had to hammer the axle very very hard in order to get it out. Doing this messed up the abs sensor on the hub. FYI its around $110 from the dealer each side retail price. Also make sure the axle you replaced it with has the grooves on it. If not, the sensor doesnt have anything to read.

Checking the code is a really good idea, and also you should check to make sure that the axles you put in has the abs pulser ring. Look on your old axles you should see a part of the outer spline where it has continuous notches around the axle (yeah poor description, but I don't have a pic.)
checking the code??? what code this is not a check engine light. not to be mean or anything but when the abs light comes on it usually means something in the abs sensor or pump. i think the two people above this post was confused on what light it was.
the only thing i can tell you is that the cv axle might have not had the abs sensor grooves, or whatever it is called. when replacing a part like that always get the same axle. use parts that was made for the car youre gonna fix, its always best to use partts that designed for the car and with the appropriate sensors etc.....

is it the grooves or notches that go all the way around the axle? is that the thing you guys are talking about. thanks!
my old one has them and the new ones..well ill check them later on tonight and let you know wsup.

If it's missing the notches, then that is your problem. Lets just put it this way. The new and old axles should pretty much look IDENTICAL. If they are not, then you are missing something on the new axle.
Regarding the code, if you look in the service manual you will see that there are codes for the Engine and ABS system. The ABS system has it's own computer. The connector to place the ABS computer in service mode is under the glove compartment, on the right side inside a rubbery cover that houses two connectors. The one with two wires is the ABS one. Just use a paper clip to short the connector (make sure it's the right one!) and then turn the ignition to on. The ABS light will blink out the code for you. Once you have the code, you can look in the service manual to see what it means.
You do have a service manual don't you?
